Why is Indiana experiencing an HIV emergency? Especially since Ryan White and his family successfully won the right for him to be back in school 30 years ago and the government program supporting those living with HIV even bears his name?
Here’s the update. More than 150 people in Austin, Indiana have been diagnosed with HIV since December. The town has a population of 4200. The response started about 8 weeks ago.
According to TIME: (Source: http://time.com/3853590/indiana-hiv-epidemic/) So far — 1/3rd of the patients in Austin have started treatment… no AIDS complications have been seen by any patients in Austin yet. But one of the physicians in Indiana on the ground providing response to the emergency declaration is Dr. Diane Janowicz… and she says this: "Only by learning the lessons from this tragic outbreak can we prevent or stymie the next rural town epidemic."
