45: André Viel - New Hope Addiction Recovery Centre
27 SEP 2018 · Certified Addictions Coach and President of The New Hope Addiction Recovery Centre André Viel joins me on the show to discuss recently revealed plans to open a new treatment facility in Fall of 2019.
Thee 23-patient establishment will be situated on 45 acres in Scoudouc, New Brunswick and plans to offer services to treat addiction along with mental health and concurrent disorders like PTSD, anxiety, depression which are often coupled with addiction.
“We will have a holistic approach paired with other proven therapy methods,” Viel explained.
“We’re also excited to be serving clients from anywhere in Canada, the U.S, or anywhere else in the world, as long as they are comfortable with group therapy in English and one-on-one therapy in either English or French.”
Explaining the need for a treatment facility such as The New Hope Recovery Centre, Mr. Viel explains, “We want to offer much-needed addiction recovery and mental health treatment with a unique approach which often appeals to individuals who would otherwise fall through the cracks.”
He continued, “We are also offering aftercare and ongoing Recovery Coaching which has proven to be effective in long-term recovery success.”
Viel was recently named to the Board of Directors for the Recovery Coaching International organization, a non-profit which works to further the interests of those in or seeking recovery from addiction.
With addiction issues and drug overdoses dominating the headlines daily, demand for treatment options and professionally trained Recovery Coaches are at an all-time high.
“Our program goals are to provide the tools, encouragement, and structure to help clients and patients to reach powerful, effective goals and to be the support many people need to find recovery success,” said Mr. Viel.
The “epidemic” is real and The New Hope Addiction Recovery Centre’s holistic techniques and focus on Recovery Coaching are recognized as innovative and effective. The strategies have been applauded throughout the behavioral health industry and beyond.
Mr. Viel and The New Hope Addiction Recovery Centre is striving to be one of the programs that can help those suffering from substance use disorder and other mental health issues find the path they need to do just that, heal and stop.
Also a Recovery Coach and Interventionist trainer for The Addictions Academy, Viel recently stated, “Our current system of addiction and substance-abuse treatment does not always work, I’ve experienced this first-hand. I felt compelled to create something that I know can and will help addicts survive and thrive.”

43: Shar Jones of Beyond Hope Radio - Mother of an Addict
17 APR 2018 · Addictions and overdoses are at an all-time high, taking the lives of our loved ones much too early. Today I will be talking to Shar Jones about the amazing work she’s doing in supporting families, especially moms, who have a son or daughter addicted to drugs or alcohol.
Shar is the mom of addict who understands first-hand the hardship of addiction and how it affects everyone close to the addict. She knows the challenges facing families who are enmeshed with a son or daughter addicted to alcohol or drugs.
Shar Jones is a Nationally Certified Interventionist, Recovery Coach, and the host of "Beyond Hope Radio" podcast.
“Beyond Hope Radio” podcast is a way for Shar to share her voice and reach moms out there who are feeling isolated, lonely and harbor a sense of powerlessness. She says, "I want to continue to share encouragement and hope with other moms."
Shar says the podcasts are about "sharing some of the gifts and tools I've acquired over the years."
Co-dependency and enabling.
Sometimes it’s hard to know whether you are helping or hurting your loved one. There is a lot of controversy around this and it’s important to disconnect the heartstrings a little. Shar states that a good place to start is to write down all the ways you are allowing them to feed their addictions. This could be lending them money, allowing them to stay with you after you said you wouldn't or driving them to work. These are co-dependency and enabling behaviors that aren't helping them.
Our job is not to fix our kids or to get them to understand how much it hurts us. "It's about getting out of our loved ones way so that they can start to heal and get the help they really need."
Choose to reclaim your life.
“I had lost my sense of identity and worth because I felt like I had failed my daughter somewhere along the way. I felt like I was a bad mom,” laments Shar.
We cover the questions and struggles moms face- How do you start to empower yourself when you have hit rock bottom as a mom? Nothing is working anymore and you start to shut down. Your loved one is still in addiction but your life is not working, your career, your marriage, your friendships - everything suffers.
On this episode, you will understand that the best thing you can do is shift focus away from trying to "fix" your loved one and start to look within. Start to care for self and start to rebuild your life. Shar discusses living a joyful, happy and healthy life that is not contingent on your loved one's recovery.
"I didn't feel like I deserved to be happy because I had this loved one who could die from her addiction,” she remembers. Tune in to learn how to set an example for your loved one and not feel guilty about it.
Finding your people.
Although there are a lot of lessons learned along the way, one thing Shar says is imperative, is that you find support from other moms who understand what you're going through. That's your lifeline.
She strongly recommends that you find your people, your community “Whether that's in al-anon or other support networks elsewhere, such as online groups on Facebook and other online forums.” You need support people who really "get it."
Shar’s one piece of advice? Let the experts help guide you and lean on other people. For her, she had to be willing to ask for help even though it was tough to recognize that this was beyond her capabilities as a mom. She says reaching out to other moms that get what you're going through is crucial.

8 FEB 2018 · Most guys, and a lot of girls watch porn. There’s certainly no shortage of it on the internet. But the sheer variety and quantity of online smut can be overwhelming, and for some people, obsession is just a click away.
“Sex or porn addiction” remains a controversial designation—often dismissed as a myth or providing talk-show punchlines thanks to high-profile addicts like Tiger Woods.
But compulsive sexual behavior can systematically destroy a person’s life much as addictions to alcohol or drugs can.
And it’s affecting an increasing number of people, say psychiatrists and addiction experts.
An article I caught recently in Newsweek claimed: “It’s a national epidemic.”
My next guest, Joshua Shea, seemingly had it all. A loving wife, two children, and a supportive extended family. In 2010, he launched a lifestyle magazine in his hometown.
Within a year, he was one of the founders of Central Maine's largest film festival and had won a seat on his City Council. Accolades, including receiving the Key to the City and being called one of the "Next 10 People Shaping Maine's Economy" by a state newspaper followed.
While the public got one picture of Shea, behind closed doors, his longtime mental health and addiction issues were festering.
Joshua is the author of the book "THE ADDICTION NOBODY WILL TALK ABOUT - How My Pornography Addiction Hurt People and Destroyed Relationships" and he's chatting with me today to help us gain some insight into this often stigmatized issue which is so hard for people to openly discuss.
