Today's guest is Josey Huffman (https://www.linkedin.com/in/josey-huffman-cm-od/). He currently works for the Strategic Resiliency Group (https://www.srgadaptive.com/). We discuss his transition story and the moves and decision-making he used when transitioning from active duty into the reserves to AGR (Active Guard/Reserves) and then to his new opportunity.
Josey is one of the many warriors I served with whom will be highlighted in SSG (R) Joe Troutman's book, which we discussed in Episode #77 (https://www.spreaker.com/episode/pffl-e-77-joe-troutman-blackhawk-company-1-23--58951819).
I think this is a great conversation. For the listeners out there, it isn't easy to spend so much time away from those you served, but for those who know the comradery from serving, it was like we never left.

26 MAR 2024 · LTG (r) Kenneth E. Tovo was commissioned from the U.S. Military Academy into the Infantry in 1983. After serving his initial tour with the 82nd Airborne Division, Tovo completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and transferred to Special Forces. He served as a Special Forces detachment, company, battalion, and group commander in the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
Tovo’s additional assignments included serving as a plans officer with 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta and Joint Headquarters Center (NATO); aide de-camp to the commander, Stabilization Force, Bosnia; chief of staff, U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC); deputy commanding general, Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR); deputy commanding general, 1st Armored Division/U.S. Division Center, Iraq; commanding general, Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT); and commanding general, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan and NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan (CSTC-A/NTM-A). Most recently, Tovo served as the military deputy commander of U.S. Southern Command in Miami, Fla.
Tovo’s operational assignments include the first Gulf War, refugee relief operations in Northern Iraq, noncombatant evacuation operations in Sierra Leone, peacekeeping operations in Bosnia on two occasions, five tours in Iraq, and one tour in Afghanistan.

Daniel P. Bolger, of Aurora, Illinois, is an author, historian, and retired Lieutenant General (promoted on 21 May 2010) of the United States Army. He teaches military History at North Carolina State University, where he holds a special faculty appointment.

Lt. Gen. Bolger retired in 2013 from the Army. During his 35 years of service, he earned five Bronze Star Medals (one for valor) and the Combat Action Badge. His notable military commands included serving as Commanding General of the Combined Security Transition Command in Afghanistan and Commander of the NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan (2011–2013), Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas (deployed to Baghdad, 2009–2010); the Coalition Military Assistance Training Team in Iraq (2005–06); and U.S. Army Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations.
He also authored books such as Why We Lost, Americans at War, The Battle for Hunger Hill, Death Ground, and The Panzer Killers.

Joe is a military veteran who has started writing a book to capture the History of Blackhawk Company 1-23rd Infantry as they transitioned away from a mechanized organization to become part of the First Stryker Bridge out of 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington. We talked about some of the experiences that we had leading up to the 20th Anniversary of our First Deployment and the 4th of August 2004. Joe’s book should be out on Amazon this year by 4 August, but we are planning to talk again before the release of the book.
