Midwest Chicana Chingona + Alissia Canady Candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Missouri
22 OCT 2020 · A conversation with Alissia Canady Candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Missouri. Alissia shared her personal story and how that influenced her to continue to work in the spaces of government work. Growing up on Kansas City’s East Side, Alissia’s mother taught her that actions speak louder than words. Before graduating from Kansas City Public Schools, she worked for eight hours every day after class. That hard work paid off, allowing Alissia to purchase her first home at 18. Alissia continued working during college, even starting her first small business. After completing her undergraduate degree in finance, she graduated from the South Dakota School of Law, and then moved back to Missouri and immediately began working full time while studying for the Missouri Bar exam. Working as an Assistant Prosecutor in Jackson County, Alissia was an advocate for victims and worked closely with communities to help reduce the epidemic of violence plaguing Kansas City. It was this experience that taught her that more police and longer prison sentences do not reduce violent crime. Focusing on public safety and healthy communities, she sought, and was elected, Councilwoman for Kansas City’s 5th District in 2015, holding leadership roles as the Chair of the Neighborhoods and Public Safety Committee and the Health Commission. Upon completing her term, Alissia returned to private law practice and served as the Chair of the Kansas City TIF Commission. Now, Alissia is bringing her work ethic and commitment to public service to Jefferson City, running for Missouri Lieutenant Governor. Chingóna podcast: Taj Mattingly Artist
10 AUG 2020 · Midwest Chicana Welcomes Taj Mattingly, Artist. Taj tells us his personal story and journey around art. About Taj After an accident that injured his dominant hand in the summer of 2016, Taj left his life of working as a graphic designer and illustrator to pursue a new way to tell his stories with artwork. Driven by a focus on technique, Taj has pushed to learn new ways of drawing that he can approach ambidextrously. At the start of 2018 he began #DrawEveryDay – a way to force himself to take time each day to make one work on paper. Following the injury Taj began experiencing chronic pain, which inevitably influenced his work. He now approaches art in a relentless pursuit. Taj’s current work uses bold, expressive marks to give the work a sense of movement that is both purposeful and unavoidable. In all of his work he pushes for a balance between overwhelming intention and calm. https://tajmakesart.com/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
