Bernie thinkis we should try a community project using Obsidian. It's starting with a small project between Roger Overall, Brigit Kolen in The Netherlands, and Tim Ereneta in California.
Bernie just heard something interesting in the podverse and by Adam Curry, the podfather. He is using Obsidian.

Can you imagine?

Here is what Adam had to say inCasting 2.0 for February 13th, 2026, episode 250, Dopaminergic:

"Obsidian's my jam. I live in Obsidian. A lot of people use Obsidian. I use it as an outline. You can use it in many different ways, and it's completely scriptable. So an example: every day it has a new folder for the year, month, day. I use a markdown widget on the browser. So if I see an article that I want to save, then I just hit that little widget and it will save the title and the URL. And on desktop, it'll actually save a markdown version of the page. The whole thing is based on markdown files.

And even if I get something from Gemini, I have a prompt that says put it into an Obsidian template. It does tags and all the stuff I need to just have a database, a knowledge base of stuff, and I can search it and I can organize it. And so when it comes to show day, regardless of what show it is, I'll check on the tags, as I mark all the different shows I do with tags. And then I drag it into a show folder with topics. And then I have a script which will export it to OPML and I can import that right into the Freedom Controller.

It really is nice. But you can also, if you want, turn it into mind mapping. I don't use that. I just use it as an outliner, knowledge-based storage system, and it syncs between all my devices. I live in that. I just absolutely write down a note, boom, got it, because you can find it. You can really find stuff. Yeah, I probably need to look at this because Alex Gates turned me on to it.

Ever since I got Obsidian, like, oh man, I love this. This thing is awesome. It really is. My whole life is in it. You can put code in it. Code blocks. Yeah, it's Markdown. So, yeah. Hello. Yeah. Hello. Pretty cool."

So that's Adam Curry talking about Obsidian, my favorite knowledge management system.
With Roger, I'm hoping to connect a vault in Obsidian between Roger, Brigit Kolen, a creative media writer in the Netherlands, and myself as we talk about authentic storytelling.

Another partner, and it would be Tim Ereneta in Berkeley, may row in.

For you then, Simon, if you think you'd be interested in connecting up a vault that would generate OPML, that would be handy.

I think I can figure it out based on the community plugins that are inside the Obsidian community, but who knows?

This is interesting.

And the other thing I want to do is use Airtable iframes inside of Obsidian.

And that should be as dead simple as buying the right plan with Airtable and then injecting, inserting the iframe.

Different plans allow different kinds of dynamic insertion. Some are just a view. Some are allowing in and out.

But those are two things: Obsidian in its native form to generate OPML. And Obsidian with in and out Airtable.

This is interesting to me because I know it moves the ball down the pitch of authentic storytelling.

This is my final day of working with a government paycheck since I am officially retired. I earned a stamp from Irish immigration that allows me to stay in Ireland for 90 days as a businessman but the stamp limits my employment options. No bother--I also have a National Immigration Card that gives me three years of greater flexibility. I was surprised to see that the immigration officer's scan of my passport did not show the existence of my other (more robust) permission to enter Ireland. Dublin on the 13th of January 2025 was quiet enough for me to hear kids playing in a city centre park and the buses were non-boisterous so I could hear electronic announcements clearly.

Four things I suggest.

1. Be real--people want to go beyond where they find you when scrolling. Have a point of presence on a map and also have activities you share on calendars. Real people have regular content.

2. Let your workflow benefit from AI. I shoot in lanscape for YouTube and in portrait for IG Stories. I often let Magisto AI put the clips together. I explain this in depth during a digital transformation studio session.

3. Share your concept work. Use Share and Share Alike Creative Commons copyright.

4. Be discoverable. That means using more than one social network. I'm migrating from Twitter to https://topgold.micro.blog and I have tens of thousands more images on https://Flickr.com/irisheyes than I have on Instagram because of handy embeddable photo albums.

I'm trying to complement my day with a simple audio blog item. I've made these occasional audio blogs since 2010 and four years ago I tried to import a string of them into Spreaker. They remind me of unfinished tasks. I can hear my own voice telling me what I'm trying to do. Today, I'm still spinning my wheels by not holding myself to ticking off items on my to-do list.

I need a To-Do List Imperative--something that encourages me to stay on task. I'm starting to wonder if I need a better electronic system, something more than Google Keep.

My blog tells me the to-do list I used the longest was Wunderlist, a service acquired by Microsoft. So I've downloaded it and hope to see its integration to Outlook on my laptop. It doesn't integrate smoothly on my Samsung Note 9 but I'm used to that.

I'm putting my hands up with an admission that I need better focus. One of my creative media students tells me it's all down to executive planning. I need better executive planning, starting with a priority system that should be carved into a nightly routine.

Saying these things out loud helps me think about what should be on my tick-off list today. Perhaps I should return at the end of the Bank Holiday Weekend and report my success.

Before I leave, I want Google to recognise my black Gothic Door and give it standing. The black Gothic Door with its Norseman tells part of the story about where I am seated while typing these thoughts. The PKM Focus for #ictedu E585

It's time to narrow my focus so I can deliver a high quality content stream for the annual ICT in Education Conference. That means drilling down into activity streams of teachers and then harvesting interesting ideas through Notion that can be shared during the conference and on https://ictedu.ie/ict-in-education-blog

I'm thinking about a routine that we're trying to choreograph for the ICT in education conference. It's an annual event. And we're late getting the proceedings underway this year, for May 14 2022, in Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland. And although that's top of my mind, what's actually as important is a series of conversations that I've had with Greg Dickson, in Alberta, Canada. Where I sit in County Tipperary, Ireland, I'm always trying to figure out a way to get stuff done--you know, better focus, accomplishment--activities that actually have collaborative value. That's my focus. That's my measure of merit. And I just want to say that, with all the little technologies that I have, and all the information that's distracting and yet helpful, I have zeroed in on a knowledge management information management method that involves Notion, plus Roam Research, and blogging in a photo stream. If everything works out the way it should, on Saturday, the 14th of May, I'll explain the process to teachers and university lecturers who attend the ICT in Education Conference. The big win today is being able to use the little Chrome extensions for the processes I just mentioned.

Scraping Through COVID with PKM Ideas E583 #PKM

I'm scraping through COVID. And I have some PKM ideas I'd like to share.

The motivation comes from Greg Dixon in Alberta, Canada. As you can tell, Greg, if you're listening, my voice is not back to normal. As I recover, I am prodded to think about how artificial intelligence and machine learning and maybe neuro linguistic programming can help evolve the workplace, or help improve my workflow.

And I'm thinking about this stuff, because I believe it's a long line of thought that you were asking about Greg, about, like, what's the big leap forward that, that me that Bernie Goldbach might see, in this space where artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the workplace coexist.

I'm a big fan of trying to keep the stuff that I discover, especially eureka moments, in places where I can find them. And what I know it's sometimes difficult to annotate them, or to categorize them. But they're valuable throwaway moments.

They would be thrown away if they couldn't be discovered or resurface later. So about a year and a half ago, I started using Roam Research, because you can just throw stuff into its system. And it has a flat text searching capability that finds everything. If you add hierarchial commands to the information--headings or hypertext links or hashtags--it's easier to surface the material and give some structure to it. But it's an unstructured database of thoughts. And over about the 18-20 month period, I've been using it.

I've been able to rediscover stuff that I didn't know I thought about and didn't know I wrote about and didn't know I talked about, but there there there, there it is, the stuff is there. Now, this is all relevant, because in the workplace, you'd like to come to the table, or be in a meeting and present thoughts that are relevant, timely, and maybe earth shaking, you know, very important, would provide a leap of capability to your team. And if the preliminary research you've done, in our case, it'd be like desktop research on a company or deep research on student trends or evolutions of different textbooks. At meetings that we have at the university level, it's good to know we can bring this information to the table. And maybe you could get the information you need to hand within just a few minutes of a meeting happening because of the way your personal knowledge management system is set up.
My Roam Research does that. And in fact, in the description of this audio clip, I'll leave a link to another more visually appealing database. It's run by Notion. And it surfaced a blog post I wrote a while back about this whole idea that I'm talking about right now. And because I wrote it in such a way that it showed up in an RSS feed, the RSS feed inside of a service called Feedly had an AI that was looking at the word PKM letters PKM, or the words personal knowledge management. It flagged that and then it pushed it into both Roam and into notion all by itself.

Since I have subscriptions--paying for Roam and paying for Notion and paying for Feedly-- I have those things running in the background. It helps surface things I need in the foreground. It be in the APIs of those systems. It be in the web hooks of the services. And then what I want to do is make all those things part of a daily process where I can leverage them. And that's what I see the big leaps between now and 2025 being where companies are going to figure this out.

I'm enslaved by Microsoft Teams. So I'm watching Azure services, the cognitive sciences part of Microsoft's Office 365, do a lot of this stuff in the background for me. I like to have it do more. So when I get a calendar alert for a meeting, I would like to know that maybe dynamically based on the words in the agenda attached to the calendar meeting, that there'll be these block links, links to blocks of text, or database links, that when the notification came to my desktop, to my Outlook, or to my Microsoft Surface Book, that Roam or Notion would pick up key terms, and all of a sudden suggest 1,2,3,4 or 5 relevant things are to look at, before the meeting starts. That behind the scenes, the AI would do this for me. I wish that the the AI could do a sentiment analysis of the people who are listed to be part of the meeting. So maybe harvesting something from their social feed or from news items that they shared or from strings of email text. I know that the thing I'm doing right now, which is I'm making a podcast that's going to go to Spreaker, that if I was making this podcast, inside my desktop, I could turn on otter.ai at the same time, and I'd have a transcript dynamically in front of me, before I even posted the audio clip.

This podcast will generate an audio clip based on how I have a surface set up behind Spreaker. And maybe there'll be a small headline right on that it'll pop out through an app that's running on the back of Spreaker as well. Something about the AI will determine what's the most relevant part of the thing I'm talking about, and then pop it that I could share on social. I've written everything I've written the main points of what I'm talking about today, already. And they've been harvested already by PKM systems of Roam and Notion.

I'm planning to put a link to this audio clip inside my Notion and Roam databases. And I've already put a link to the Notion database up on a Twitter thread, where Greg Dixon and I are talking.

I asked for it to be public, so click it. And you'd see the Notion database with some people at the top of it, which would include Patrick and John Collison. Patrick's major investor doing a $10 million investment in Roam Research so he sees the value of this.

Okay, I'm explaining what we're doing with what I'm talking about here to a group of postgraduate students starting in October 2022. They're interested in digital transformation. Personal knowledge management is part of that. Amazed to see how transcripts from https://otter.ai fold directly into https://roamresearch.com
made a two minute clip inside Otter and as I drove into 4G connectivity, my spoken audio uploaded to Otter in the background.

When I sat down at my laptop 20 minutes later, I watched the transcript of the audio clip drop into my Roam Research knowledge graph. This elegant connectivity of services will be a big enhancement to my daily notetaking and a major boost to my work with Open Education Resources. As you can hear from one of my Topgold Audio Clips, I want to give props to JavaScript developer David Vargas and to supporters like Jordan Burton and Dave Prout who made this happen.

For John Tierney (one of the five regular people who read my blog), this is Otter, JavaScript, and Roam Research all connecting complementary pieces of technology to provide a unified system for processing. This sort of service would be a valuable part of the toolkit for field researchers. And when integrated to part of a daily review process, these connected services would help ensure that no good ideas will get lost.

Let's hashtag this episode as #digped (for digital pedagogy) because it's something I think ought to be considered by all teachers.

I'm talking about live transcription of ideas that may connect to a story arc or that may become a publication.

I like methods that allow you can to simply talk and appear to be more intelligent than you are. I like things that allow you to listen and then to harvest thoughts by connecting ideas that you didn't think related to one another. And I do these things using https://otter.ai to talk where my words--like the ones I'm speaking now-- become words on the screen, in addition to words in your earbuds. Otter.ai does that.

For you, Liam Daly aka https://twitter.comeolai, https://otter.ai would take the lovely journey you made around Ireland during a cycling painting tour and would make ideas you express in the comfort of your own studio into segments. Then they could become chapters which you could fold into a book. It's a pretty easy and straightforward process. You already have notes that are logically organized by time, or by venue, or by the color of the sky, or by the color of a wheel, or by a bicycle adventure. And you already have these concepts inside Evernote, or inside storage locations with pictures. Your word pictures are ready to be expressed.

https://otter.ai can take what you say about the pictures you have or the thoughts that you've considered and make them into easily readable text.

I don't know why https://otter.ai is so good. I just know that what what you're hearing me speak now can be transcribed with better than 90% accuracy by the https://otter.ai transcription service. So I'm all-in as an advocate of the https://otter.ai transcription service.

And I actually think I should pay for more than 60 minutes a month, but I don't use the full free tier plan that they give me.

As I start a new school year, I want to connect https://otter.ai to Microsoft Teams for the learning program that we have at the Limerick Institute of Technology. That's what I want to do.

So how about you? Where are your notes kept? In the case of a conversation I had with Liam Daly during a Dalkey Open session on Zoom I learned that Liam has a lot of things inside Evernote. I've got a lot of things scattered in different systems--OneNote Google Drive, and now Roam Research. If I have the discipline to take what I'm thinking about, like right now, I'm thinking about digital pedagogy, it's a hashtagged piece of content, part of a database I have inside of Roam Research--if I take what I'm saying now, produce the text, and then also upload the audio file you're listening to into Roam Research, a year or so from now, when I'm talking to colleagues about how they do their business, of producing information people can read, that people can listen to, that people can view, I can say, "Hey, what about this idea? Take the notes you have in your mind, or the notes you have in front of you on a screen or in a paper and talk about them in a way that someone wants to listen. Give it a little little structure, give it a story arc, give it a certain kind of hero's journey with what you're saying. And then let the surface that the artificial intelligence. Take what you're saying and make it into text." And then perhaps illustrate it with screen grabs or with simple words or with pull quotes.

What I do now is I make these episodes available free in a syndicated way you can listen to on Spotify and any other network. You can also go to the Spreaker app and see images corresponding to everything I talked about. It is all part of the Topgold Audio Clips that I make.

I AM TRYING to validate a long-standing relationship I've had with Google Keep because I want to be able to dictate notes and have them appear on my calendars. This has become more important now that my calendar rotates into view on our Amazon Echo Show.

I'm trying to lock Google Keep into my daily workflow because I think it offers the lowest demands on my laptop, mobile phone, and tablet. It's simply text (or tick-off lists) that I can pin on my devices. I could go all-in with Teams or Slack, adding services that offer exceptionally rich tracking of tasks, but I need a simple note-taking tool that offers me audio inputs and Keep's simple and elegant functionality has served me well. Hi, it's Bernie Goldbach Topgold Audio Clip 530. Today we're exploring how to make Lane One content. I teach in a creative multimedia program. I have digital animators, game art designers, Creative Media students, all looking at content that I produce. It's important I think, to make four different lanes for the content that they see. And the first lane is simple text. I'm using a Sennheiser wireless memory mic right now. It's just clipped on to the color of my shirt. I'm talking to you in a garage. So it's probably echoey. That's okay. I'm just trying to see with this work. Can I talk to you about the concept of my four lanes of academic work, and then have the memory might give you lane number two, which is the audio as well as author the speech to text Engine give you lane number one. For the record, lanes three and four are video. There's a high definition live video stream that's in lane four. And then that same video is normally cut down, perhaps with some call outs added for a third lane for rewind. So, how does this go on for you? Can you hear what I'm saying? If so, that means my lane two is well established. Can you go to the show notes of this episode, and see the unfiltered uncorrected transcript rendered by otter. If that's more than 80% accurate, it's a good deal. In that it saves me time to produce an outtake of what an entire hour long conversation would be like, if you threw show notes in outline form. They simply don't synchronize to my Samsung Note nine. need to fix that, perhaps by reinstalling the app or by cleaning up the phone and giving the app more space to work. Sharing thoughts from Holly Jackson on 4 July Dr. Jackson is at work on a book about 19th-century radical movements in the United States. Jackson writes in NYT. "How do you celebrate Independence Day? A cookout? Maybe take the kids to a parade? "William Lloyd Garrison, the 19th-century abolitionist, had a different idea for how to observe the holiday. Every flag should be either taken down or flown at half-staff, he wrote in his newspaper, The Liberator, and 'all signs of exultation, parade and boasting should be studiously suppressed.' The usual rounds of celebratory music, marching and fireworks must be abandoned until 'the millions of our oppressed countrymen are emancipated.” In the meantime, the Fourth of July “should be made THE DAY OF DAYS for the overthrow of slavery.' "In our time, July 4 has become detached from the politics of protest. But the history of the United States suggests that this need not — indeed, ought not — be the case. "Garrison borrowed the July 4 protest tradition from a group of black activists in Albany. When slavery was legally abolished in New York on July 4, 1827, they resolved not to celebrate. Instead, they mourned all those who remained in bondage and came out the following day for public reflection on the nation that allowed it. This became a tradition that continued until the Civil War."
