Dog food companies conduct extensive taste tests using hundreds of dogs to determine their preferences, taking great care to avoid any factors that might influence the results. 

They use precise measurements to track the dogs' eating behavior, including how much they consume each second, their chewing frequency, and the size of their bites.

You can conduct a simple taste test at home:

• Ensure your dog is not food possessive, as you'll be handling tasty treats around him. 
• Gather two bowls, a piece of screen, and two types of food that are of similar size. 
• Place one piece of each type in separate bowls and cover them with the screen to allow your dog to sniff each one. 
• Position the bowls at an equal distance from your dog and then remove the screen. 
• Observe which food your dog chooses to eat first.
• Repeat this process by alternating the sides of the bowls with the screen replaced each time.
• Continue until your dog consistently shows a preference. Then introduce another flavor for comparison.
