7 MAY 2023 · In this special mini-episode, (the Sophie Solo I like to call them), I dive into some personal stories of mine all around loneliness.
This is a topic that I find people rarely talk about from a career perspective, but more from a personal perspective, but this was something that came about when I was thinking back on my own career path.
Having been in a corporate leadership role from a young age, I wanted to share my experiences in this, and also now years later as I run my own business, the loneliness still resides.
HR can also really keep you in a silo, due to the nature of the job and knowing highly sensitive information, makes for a very lonely experience. Where does HR go, when they are the leaning pillar for the company?
As a business owner now, I try to surround myself with vibrant people who can help me learn, grow and have a good time too. But as an entrepreneur, you need to actively seek out this as you don’t have colleagues you can fall back on.
If you are feeling this, know you are not alone and things do get better. Harness the power of your loneliness, lean on those around you and find your tribe!

19 APR 2023 · Sophie and Libby delve into the topics of feminism and International Women's Day. They explore the different ways in which women are perceived in the workplace and the wider world.
Sophie shares her personal journey as a young leader at the age of 25 and the challenges she faced in leadership roles not only as a woman but as a young leader. They discuss how certain leadership styles can lack authenticity and limit your potential to add value and emphasize the importance of being able to shine as yourself rather than simply fulfilling a role description.
Sophie and Libby also touch on the issue of pinkwashing and how it tends to occur on International Women's Day. They also debate the leadership styles of agentic and communal leadership – directive and authoritative – and how to find the balance between them. They stress the importance of looking at how people lead rather than letting their gender define their leadership style.
Moreover, they address the misconception of gender and how women and men are perceived differently, and highlight the problems within feminism. They explain that it's not about the gender you present as, but rather about the expectations attached to that gender that can prevent you from delivering your full potential. Lastly, Sophie debates with Libby about the case for men and how it's important to talk about men's issues and problems equally as women.

Sophie and Lindsey dive deeper into the principles of NLP and how it can be used to help individuals overcome various challenges in their lives. They discuss how NLP works by understanding how the brain processes information, and how this can be used to change behaviours and thought patterns.

22 MAR 2023 · In this episode, Sophie sits down with former police hostage negotiator Scott Walker to talk about the art of negotiation. Scott has a new book coming out called "The Order of Chaos," which Sophie describes as a user's manual and ethos for negotiating and communicating effectively in daily business and personal life. Drawing on his real-life experiences in hostage negotiation, Scott provides many tools and strategies for negotiation, which he discusses further in the podcast.
The conversation kicks off with a discussion on mindset and how having the right mindset sets the tone for negotiation. Scott emphasizes the importance of clear, objective, and rational thinking in all communication. Managing your state of mind is crucial to articulating yourself appropriately in any given situation.
Building trust is also a key element of successful negotiation, and understanding the needs of the person you're negotiating with is essential. Sophie and Scott go on to define sympathy, empathy, and compassion. Scott breaks down empathy into emotional and cognitive empathy and explains how the two lead towards compassion. He argues that being sympathetic is not effective in negotiation.

8 MAR 2023 · In this podcast, Sophie moves away from the cultures of workplaces and discusses businesses from a customer or clients’ point of view with George Beverly of Insightful UX. George’s business helps organisations understand their clients’ customers / clients and the different cultures within their customer base to help organisations deliver their services or products effectively.
The episode looks at how consumers of products are extremely diverse and George – who in his podcast, The Audience Detective, discusses Ginger Nuts biscuits as an example; Ginger Nut biscuits have a client base of builders, nurses, and pregnant women. A kaleidoscope of different people with different reasons for purchasing the product but organisations must find a commonality among all these diverse individuals.
This episode also touches upon stories and particularly the ‘Stories which we tell ourselves’ - a phrase coined by Brene Brown. Sophie and George discuss how stories are so influential in our lives, businesses and elaborate on how we convince ourselves with these stories whilst rarely look for the facts behind them and running without first hypothesis.

22 FEB 2023 · In this episode, Sophie discusses the benefits of implementing a coaching culture in the workplace with Victoria Usher, founder and CEO of GingerMay PR. Sophie and Victoria discuss how by integrating a coaching culture in an organisation empowers individuals to thrive and allows them to grow as people. Such a culture creates a positive and supportive work environment, leading to better outcomes for both employees and the organization.
Victoria takes great pride in allowing her employees to have freedom within boundaries but also sees her role within the company as an educator. As an advocate for sustainability, Victoria encourages and educates her staff about living sustainably whilst integrating it within the business. The company has provided several workshops about sustainability including topics such as cleaning products highlighting the some of the dangers commercial products have on not only the environment but to people’s health.
Finally, the discussion moves to the different colours of personality in the DiSC profile. The DISC profile is commonly used in organizational settings for team building, leadership development, and employee training. By understanding their own DISC style and the styles of others, individuals can improve communication and collaboration, manage conflicts more effectively, and increase overall productivity and performance. Victoria explains how important it is that a person’s colour matches their role within the workplace, allowing them to feel fulfilled and benefiting the output of the business.

8 FEB 2023 · In this episode, Sophie is joined by Christopher Walker who has similarly moved away from his corporate career into one of training and coaching incorporating the use of positive psychology in the workplaces he engages with.
Positive psychology, according to Christopher Peterson, is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living – it explores character strengths, optimism, happiness, wellbeing, and compassion. Christopher strives to make it his mission to dispel the myth that happiness in work is pink and fluffy. He argues it is more about flourishing on multiple levels such as a personal, cultural, relational, biological and global level.
Sophie and Christopher discuss why positive psychology is so important in workplaces today and how an uncertain climate and a volatile landscape have led to a need for all organisations needing a Chief Happiness Officer or Strategic Positive Psychologist– a skilled person in understanding organisation challenges and who can drive effective leadership.
This podcast discusses many staggering facts about how unhappy people are feeling in their work right now - and all over the world. One powerful thing Christopher suggests we can do is to encourage people to build positive connections. He explores how we should invest in strategies that bring people together. As human beings, we crave meaningful connections which create oxytocin, and gives us a sense of bonding and increase our sense of belonging.
This all combines to improve the mental health and well-being of everyone. If we offer people a range of opportunities to connect and support people to engage in work that utilises their strengths, people then report feeling more engaged and energised.

25 JAN 2023 · In this short solo session, Sophie discusses three concepts that we all need to consider as we progress into a new year; purpose, rituals and connection.
Sophie shares the idea of purpose and questions whether the organisations we work with are sharing our individual sense of purpose - and what happens when they don’t. This makes it incredibly hard to uphold the values of the organisation we work with and also does not allow us to be our true authentic selves.
Sophie then talks about the importance of rituals in our everyday lives and how they prime us for the things we are to face throughout the day. We are continually immersed in rituals without even knowing, for example rituals of induction to a workplace or switching off rituals at the end of the day, and these sometimes small and simple actions allow us to connect with our experiences. Sophie shares some of her past and current rituals that have helped her throughout her work and home life.
Finally, combining purpose and rituals, Sophie examines the connection in our lives. How lacking authenticity and not allowing us to behave as our true self makes it difficult to build connections with others. Sophie describes a recent music concert she attended, along with seventy-six thousand others, and describes the sense of connection with the thousands who were present and unified at that moment.

18 JAN 2023 · In this session, Sophie discusses psychoanalysis in the workplace with Director, Consultant and Author, Gabriella Braun. Sophie and Gabriella go into detail about Gabriella’s book ‘All That We Are,’ which looks at applying psychoanalytical thinking to understand the workplace and human behaviour.
Gabriella discusses how people need to embrace themselves for all that they are; the good, and bad as this encompasses all our personal experiences and makes us who we are. We shouldn’t leave our personalities, history or trauma at the door – it makes us who we are and argues we should allow the richness of who we are to come to play in the workplace.
Sophie and Gabriella explore how we all have an opposing pull of violence, aggression and hatred which is suppressed in our unconscious. Therefore, we never accept all of ourselves - who we truly are. It is important to recognise the side of us that we don’t necessarily want to.
One topic of the podcast is the sense of belonging in the workplace. Gabriella suggests that love is needed in the workplace to bring a sense of commitment and a genuine compassion of how others are actually feeling and spaces need to be created which allow people to be human.
The podcast concludes with the theme of speaking the unspeakable – raising those uncomfortable truths that need to be aired and Gabriella discusses some examples from her book. We all have pre-occupations before we get into the workspace, and by airing some of these, it allows people to breathe, relax and embrace themselves, their full selves, in the workplace.
