Scholarships to study an advanced degree in Chemistry with Dr Luis Echegoyen, 2019 President of the American Chemical Society
29 APR 2020 · Our special guest is Dr. Luis Echegoyen, 2019 president of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Echegoyen is the Robert A. Welch Professor of Chemistry at the University of Texas, El Paso. Previously he was the Director of The Chemistry Division of the National Science Foundation and before that professor and Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Clemson University.
Dr. Luis Echegoyen graduated with a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico and did his postdoc at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Next, he transferred to Union Carbide as a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopist. In 1977 he returned to the University of Puerto Rico and started his fruitful academic career. He also had professorship positions at the University of Maryland and the University of Miami, and did two sabbatical terms, one at the Universite Louis Pasteur, France, and another at the Swiss Institute of Technology or ETH, in Zurich.
In this conversation, Dr. Echegoyen talks about his treasured memories of childhood in Cuba. His father, the internationally acclaimed actor Luis Echegoyen, who scaped with the family and took refuge in Puerto Rico when Fidel Castro ousted the dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Those were hard times. But hard work and perseverance rendered fruit. Thanks to his father, Dr. Echegoyen met in person famous people like Leopoldo Fernández (Trespatines), star in the internationally known TV and radio show "La Tremenda Corte", and the world-renowned singer Celia Cruz.

26 APR 2020 · El Dr. Randall Rojas es profesor en el Departamento de Economía en la Universidad de California en Los Angeles. El Dr. Rojas y yo entramos a la universidad de Costa Rica el mismo año y nuestra primera clase fue Cálculo Diferencial e Integral, un lunes a las 7 de la mañana en el segundo piso de la escuela de matemática. Randall por buen alumno y yo porque tenía un problema médico, nos sentamos en la primera fila y allí comenzó nuestra amistad.
El Dr. Rojas tiene doble bachillerato, en física y en matemática, ambos en la universidad de california en los Ángeles o UCLA. Además maestría y doctorado en astrofísica en la universidad de Drexel. Y maestría y doctorado en estadística, ambos en la universidad de california en los Ángeles.
Actualmente el Dr. Rojas es profesor en el departamento de economía en la universidad de California en Los Ángeles e investiga en el campo de econo-física e ingeniería financiera en que aplica principios físicos, la estadística y la psicología al estudio de los mercados. El Dr. Rojas también hace investigación en el campo de la ciencia del aprendizaje aplicando redes bayesianas para modelar la adquisición de conocimiento o aprendizaje en humanos. En el campo de la astrofísica el doctor Rojas se enfoca en el campo de la astro estadística y su objetivo es usar estadística para desarrollar modelos de la estructura del universo y de esa forma comprender la rica complejidad del universo y su historia.

25 FEB 2019 · Orlando comenzó su trayectoria académica en la Escuela Politécnica Nacional en Quito, Ecuador. Seguidamente obtuvo una maestría en Ingeniería Mecánica y Aeroespacial en Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. Esta maestría fue patrocinada con una beca Fullbright. Estando aun en Oklahoma State University, Orlando comenzó el doctorado en ingenieria mecánica; no obstante, en 2016 Orlando se trasladó a Texas A&M University con su asesor, continuando el mismo posgrado.

11 JAN 2019 · Dr. Bernard Appiah, assistant professor in the School of Public Health at Texas A&M University.
Dr. Appiah is also the Director of the Centre for Science and Health Communication, a nonprofit based in Ghana, with a mission of promoting public engagement with science and health issues. He is involved in two main programs: a project to help environmental researchers engage the media in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda, which is funded by the Wellcome Trust in the United Kingdom (as principal investigator); and 2) the AuthorAID project of INASP, United Kingdom, which provides networking, mentoring, resources and training for researchers in developing countries to publish and otherwise communicate their research. In these roles, he combines his communication expertise in research, teaching, and service.

Eso nos dice el Dr. Luis Bernardo Torres, profesor e investigador en bienes y raíces en la Escuela de Negocios Mays en Texas A&M University. El profesor Torres hizo su pregrado en economía en el Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey y su doctorado en The University of Colorado Bolder. Trabajó en el Banco de México y en la Reserva Federal de los Estados Unidos en Dallas, Texas.
