This program explores the albums that made a difference
10 SEP 2024 · This week's show has us go through Jethro Tull's 1970 LP, Benefit. The album, which sees the band transitioning away from the bluesy beginnings and moving toward their prog rock future, has long been a personal favourite from the band. We're going to check out the UK tracklist and feature outtakes and singles.
27 AUG 2024 · Spin the Black Circle on https://www.facebook.com/RadioGordo?__cft__[0]=AZWg30I0aWMRVlPJ-SkC7NWY8WK4U0oKn7tVzrrZZEk0pluA38s5q655Av3QUPWTxptJWaU6URLIzWttISV8HK39Lmfcp4HJ6HZ3R1DuPou8Vtc5zX3EZbTp2cGnV1MeAydbIXx1GfTCrYVLRE7gjdwiY00oG0w3nkFKu9Zp6ZzOYfNjHnUq4EFIW5g0DCFx9h4&__tn__=-]K-R. "Elephant" by The White Stripes is the album of choice this time. The 2003 release solidified the band as one of the biggest based, in large part, on the anthemic riff of "Seven Nation Army". They were already a modern rock phenomenon on the basis of 2001's "White Blood Cells" but the anti-modern technology recording approach to this album made them pop culture superstars.
22 AUG 2024 · In this episode we dive into The Beatles' classic 1966 release, Revolver. This album was the last the band released while still a touring band but their coming studio years were foreshadowed with cuts like "Love You To", "Yellow Submarine", and "Tomorrow Never Knows". We'll listen to the album and then a number of early takes/demos/alternate mixes.
2 AUG 2024 · This week we listen to Patti Smith's 1975 debut, "Horses". All these years later this album still stands as an incredible testament to the creative possibilities of punk rock before the genre became codified by distorted buzzsaw riffs and spiked mohawks. The marriage of poetry and anarchic playing creates songs of beauty.
27 JUL 2024 · This week we're taking on Gary Numan's 1979 solo debut "The Pleasure Principle". Having recently dropped "Tubeway Army" (his punkish band) and guitars themselves, Numan crafted an album at turns synth-pop, new wave, and electronic. It features the world-wide hit "Cars" and a slew of songs influential to many artists 45 years later.
27 JUL 2024 · We're diving into what is often called the greatest live rock album ever recorded, "The Who Live at Leeds". First up is the original version, the lean and loud single disc version. Then we'll follow that up with cuts from the expanded editions. There's a reason why The Who were considered a formidable beast in the live setting, and this album is it!
16 JUL 2024 · Hosted by Randall Liboiron
7 JUL 2024 · in 1979 AC/DC released on of the greatest rock albums of all time. We're diving into "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC. It's a lean and muscular album devoid of gratuities. And, as if that's not enough, after we listen to the album we're going to hear how powerful the band was on stage in 1979 playing some of these songs.
27 JUN 2024 · Spin the Black circle is up at 2pm on https://www.facebook.com/RadioGordo?__cft__%5B0%5D=AZVHfyKub0UhysrFO-ktg7Pez6Co8laSTKsv0zz5S7JP4NbLyu3XL57EODoNgMPVxitAoQ_cimiQRkkfgiC1RlZXeyJ7U4EaGylS4Rvz3tZHnqGobPrFEtQfHDyim03z6vK75G4QOXbaK8WVNj8V_0bN-eop_0zrmfj_f3SA1Y4Typ85TqESJ2sZpCMOJj_iBxI&__tn__=-%5DK-R and this week we're diving into Jefferson Airplane's 1967 classic, "Surrealistic Pillow". This album is one of the best examples of early psychedelic rock before everything became so much louder through amplification. The music has the space to breathe on this album. Marty Balin composed some of his best ballads for this LP before the volume of the band pushed these songs to the side. There's little wonder why this was a quintessential soundtrack to the summer of love after listening. We also check out some out-takes and mono mixed singles.
18 JUN 2024 · On this week's show we dig into Jeff Beck's 1968 solo debut "Truth". This fantastic album features incredibly song selection (most are covers), great musicianship, and top-notch vocals from Rod Stewart. We're also going to check out some singles that bridged the gap between Beck leaving the Yardbirds and releasing this album.
