Ricky and his wife and three children are nearly 1 year into their way around-the-world “Daddy Blogger World Tour”. They are visiting Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, and Central America. Ricky travels around the world with his family, getting sponsorship for travel.
Ricky Shetty lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where he hosts a number of successful Vancouver-based Internet conferences, and is probably best known as the “Daddy Blogger”. He is the host of ‘Digital Nomad Mastery Podcast’. Ricky produced over 300+ podcasts episodes from different countries on his amazing journey and he’s monetizing his podcasts in different ways.
Getting Sponsorship for Travel
If you ever wondered how in the world you would be getting sponsorship for travel, just follow the footsteps and advice of Ricky. Ricky’s biggest piece of advice to become a podcasting nomad, is build up not just a blog or a podcast but build up a brand an online entity, an online following, a network. Ricky started his blog 5 years ago and has built up a successful following, a loyal and engaged audience. Now, he’s getting lot of global sponsors. Major cities like Paris, New York, London and others have their own tourism boards that have specific budgets allocated towards international media. So it’s all sponsored travel for podcasters and bloggers, you can get points and miles and subsidize your flights around the world.
Influencer marketing
Companies, brands and corporations, they’re now working with people called influencers and that’s a big hot term in internet marketing nowadays. These companies pay influencers who have audience and networks to actually market their products and services to that influencer’s network. It’s kind of word-of-mouth marketing rather than the company reaching out directly to the consumer. They’re using that middleman, that word of mouth marketer who is just an average person like any other. This type of marketing is called influencer marketing.
Hire a Podcasting Coach
Blogging has been around for quite a while but podcasting is still picking up of late. There exist 600 million blogs today versus 300,000 podcasts and which clearly says it’s time to start a podcast. However, compared to blogging, podcasting is a bit complicated. Lot of technical stuff is involved which can create headaches and loss of countless hours for these busy podcasters. So hiring a podcasting coach will drastically cut down podcasters time and energy.

#056 | You Have a Voice, You Have a Story, and They Deserve to Be Shared with Tequila Dodard, Host of “Stand Out Be You”
3 AUG 2018 · In this episode of Podcasting Mastery, James Martell tucked into the ‘Secret Beach Hut Studio’ talks with Tequila Dodard, Host of the “Stand Out Be You” Podcast about finding your voice, crafting your podcasting story and why she decided to hire a podcasting coach.
Tequila Dodard is a former Corporate Executive and was used to working and putting in the time. However, as she said “this go round I wanted to earn my income a little differently”. She goes on to say “I simply wanted to earn from home, impress my kids and help my guy (hubby) out with money for: Yeah! My constant need for travel.” She wanted to create that ‘portable income’ that which can move around with her as she travelled. She found that was only possible using the Internet.
Blogging vs Podcasting
Before getting into podcasting, Tequila has done some freelance writing and blogging, getting residual income. But she understood she had a love- hate relationship with the blogging world. In due course, instead of going back with the degrees she had, she’s decided to look into what she could learn more on the Internet utilizing the current skills and taking those skills to the next level. She found podcasting a lot easier, because you’ll be able to come and share your thoughts, get your content out just by actually speaking what’s in your mind that you really would have written on your blog. You’ll be able to get all that out and then transcribe the media.
You Don’t Have To Be Perfect, You Just Have To Be YOU!
In Tequila’s opinion, mistakes are where we learn the most from. She says to her children in the house, ‘You don’t have to be Perfect you just have to be you’. Trying to figure out herself how she can fit into the online world or community, she was trying to perfect everything. That ‘perfection’, she found was holding her back. Eventually, she started to say to herself, ‘You don’t have to be perfect, just be you. It just makes it that much easier for you to move to the next step.’

Podcasting made Tequila very excited. However, the technology end of it was again trying to perfect it and trying to get it exactly right. It was holding her back and that’s where James, who’s an expert podcast coach, came to her rescue. #055 | An Easier Way to Run Your Business (and Manage Your Podcast) with Wailin Wong, Co-Host of The Rework Podcast
2 AUG 2018 · In this edition of the Podcasting Mastery podcast, your host James Martell, is joined by Wailin Wong, Co-Host and Co-Producer of The Rework Podcast to talk about A Better Way to Work and Run Your Business. The Rework Podcast is a business show by Basecamp, a Chicago based Software Company whose founders wrote the best selling 2010 business book, Rework. William Taylor, founder of Fast Company magazine said, “The brilliance of Rework is that it inspires to rethink everything you thought you knew about strategy, customers and getting things done.”
How Basecamp started its Podcast, The Distance
At the end of 2013 Jason Fried, Co-founder of Basecamp brought Wailin on board at the time he wanted to launch a long form written publication like an online magazine about independent privately held old businesses that were at least 25 year old, that had never taken outside investment. The thinking behind that was to lift up entrepreneurs and start up founders, as these demigods of business figured it all out and they’re growing their business and they’re wildly successful. But they are unheralded, they’re the unsung heroes of the business world because they’re just being heads down working and they’ve been building life style businesses which are sometimes looked down upon in other corners of the business world.
Jason wanted Wailin to write these well reported long form features about these businesses and about a year into that, they decided to test out audio as there was a lot of enthusiasm around podcasts. So they switched to podcasting, also having understood why podcasters are the new influencers and started The Distance.
The Rework Podcast and its Launch
Just earlier this year, Jason was ready to see if they could take what they had learnt about podcasting and apply it to a different kind of show. Launch a new show and get everybody excited about something different, and do a show that would take the themes from the book Rework. They wanted to increase listener interaction in the process.
ReworkThe Rework podcast interviews small business owners and also people who work at Basecamp including the company’s founders. Their ideal listener is a small business owner or an aspiring entrepreneur, podcaster or someone who wants to work smarter or saner within the company. Wailin sat down with a copy of Rework and pulled out all the themes to build the episodes around. The book was found to be a really good framework for telling interesting personal business stories that all relate back to the Basecamp philosophy. These stories illustrate Basecamp principles in action and it’s kind of getting the Basecamp philosophy out there but in a useful way.
But they’re not totally beholden to following the book page by page; if there’s interesting topics that come out that fit in the Basecamp wheelhouse, they have complete flexibility to build an episode around that. They recently had an episode out, where Wailin interviewed the Co-Founder David Heinemeier Hansson about fighting on Twitter and there’s no chapter in Rework about fighting on Twitter. They also have illuminating conversations about all sorts of things; online debates and what it means to have extreme voices and other stuff.

#054 | How to Find and Attract Influential Guests for Your Show with Rockie Lee
1 AUG 2018 · From the secret beach hut studio, Podcasting Veteran James Martell talks to Rockie Lee, relationship coach, and host of the Clarity Coach podcast about how to attract influential guests for your show.
Rockie is the host of the Clarity Coach podcast series and a relationship coach. He specializes in working with singles and couples who want to get married and are tired of the dating scene. He focuses on the big dream that each couple has for their marriage. And with divorced clients who want to restart life all over again, he helps them get unstuck and discover how to dream again.
Approaching Guests and Choosing Topics
Rockie offers some advice to would be podcasters: Just jump in, and do the show. Then, you begin to develop your voice. Don’t jam every episode with guest speakers. Select people who have something specific to say and insight about your podcast’s focus – such as relationship topics, in Rockie’s case.
Sometimes podcasters are uncomfortable about approaching people to be guests on their series. Many podcasters think they must have hundreds of episodes behind you before anyone with stature is willing to be a guest on their podcast. However, people are eager to be guests on a podcast. You may know of people who are experts, find them via a Google search, check out their Website, determine how to contact them, and send a request to them to be a guest on your podcast. This is how to attract influential guests.
How to Attract Influential Guests – Making the Approach
It may take you months to hear whether someone you contacted is willing to be a guest on your show. But don’t give up. Be persistent. When asking someone to be a guest, be completely clear about why you want them on your podcast and what they can speak about and offer your guests. Give them a very specific topic – not something general that they talk about all the time.
Rockie utilizes James’ Virtual Producer service, where a Producer who works remotely connects the podcast Rockie with his guest via Skype to record the broadcast. Erik Reynolds is Rockie’s virtual producer. He records Rockie’s shows. Erik connects or introduces Rockie to his guest over the phone via Skype. Erik takes care of all the technical aspects of Rockie’s shows. He edits the podcast shows. So, as the host, Rockie has to do very little work, such as the research. Erik and Arlene (James’ wife) handles most of the work to get the show done.
Quality of the Work
Learn how to organize the content of your show. Work on the end result before even getting started. There are tons of coaches now doing “live” content. But to set yourself apart from others and to be different, your podcast needs to be different. Make sure your show is coming from a very different niche, and avoid duplicating content that is already available from others.
Craft your show by doing a lot of research. Be specific about a topic and what you specialize in. Give the guest a topic and force the conversation. For the first part of his podcast, Rockie focuses on linguistics and technical aspects. The second half of his show focuses on practical content. It’s about creating an advocacy podcast.
