In this episode, host Jack Mercer brings together everything covered in the series to explore how players can build a truly complete technical padel game. Whether you are a beginner looking to develop solid foundations or an intermediate player trying to level up your consistency, this episode delivers practical insight into how to connect every element of your game. Jack covers the importance of active recovery after every stroke, the danger of over-relying on a favourite shot, and how to practise the transition between offensive and defensive play more effectively.
The episode also explores the technical dimension of padel as a doubles sport, discussing how individual technique must integrate with partner communication, spatial awareness, and complementary positioning. Jack also makes a compelling case for simplicity as a hallmark of advanced technical play, arguing that consistency and efficiency outperform complexity at every level.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Master the Shots, host Jack Mercer breaks down three of the most overlooked technical fundamentals in padel: wrist mechanics, grip pressure, and swing patterns. Whether you're a beginner looking to build solid foundations or an intermediate player trying to sharpen your shot quality, this episode delivers actionable insights that will immediately influence how you approach every rally.
Jack explores why padel demands a different approach to grip than tennis, explaining the concept of a relaxed firm grip and why excessive tension is one of the most common mistakes holding players back. He dives into the continental grip as a starting point and explains how natural, fluid adjustments from that base position give players the versatility they need across different shot types.
The episode places particular focus on the wrist as an active and essential tool in padel, especially given the role of walls and glass panels in the game. Jack uses the bandeja as a key example to illustrate how controlled wrist flexibility directly determines whether a shot is effective or exploitable.
Swing mechanics round out the discussion, with Jack making the case for compact, accelerating swings over big backswings, and outlining the specific swing characteristics that work best for forehands, backhands, and net volleys.
The episode closes with practical advice on using shadow swings and feed drills to build reliable muscle memory.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Master the Shots, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of padel's most technically rewarding and tactically powerful strokes: the bajada. Known as the drop off the back wall, the bajada is a slice-based shot played as the ball descends from the back glass, offering players a rare chance to turn a defensive situation into an offensive opportunity.
Jack covers everything you need to know to start developing this shot with confidence, including how to read the ball off the back glass early, the correct footwork and body positioning, the slice mechanics that generate backspin, and the optimal angles for placing the ball near the side glass. He also addresses the most common mistakes players make when learning the bajada, such as decelerating through the shot, poor racket preparation, and waiting too long to set up.
Whether you're a beginner curious about advanced padel technique or an intermediate player looking to add a new weapon to your game, this episode provides a clear and practical roadmap for mastering the bajada.
Topics covered in this episode include: what the bajada is and when to use it, footwork and positioning for the back glass, slice technique and racket path, cross-court versus down-the-line placement, and how to structure your practice sessions for maximum improvement.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Master the Shots, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most fascinating and underexplored topics in padel technique: the physics of spin. Whether you are a beginner trying to understand why the ball behaves so differently after a slice or an intermediate player looking to add more topspin to your game, this episode delivers the science behind the shots in a clear and accessible way.
Jack explores the Magnus effect, the aerodynamic principle first described by physicist Heinrich Magnus in 1852, and explains exactly how spinning objects behave differently in the air depending on the direction and speed of their rotation. From topspin shots that dip aggressively and kick high off the court, to slice shots that skid low and rob your opponents of pace, every type of spin has a physical explanation rooted in pressure differentials and rotational energy.
The episode also dives into how spin interacts with padel's unique court surfaces, including the back and side glass panels, helping players understand why certain shots produce unpredictable rebounds and how to use that knowledge strategically.
Key topics covered include: the mechanics of topspin vs backspin, the Magnus effect explained simply, how spin affects court and glass bounces, swing path and racket angle for generating spin, and how reading spin improves overall court awareness.
Whether you are watching matches or stepping onto the court yourself, understanding spin science will transform the way you see padel. Subscribe to Padel Up: Master the Shots for weekly episodes covering technique, tactics, and everything in between.

Jack covers the essential ready position and explains why keeping your weight on the balls of your feet is a game changer. 24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Master the Shots, host Jack Mercer breaks down everything you need to know about groundstrokes in padel, covering how to generate power and precision from the back of the court. Whether you are a beginner building your foundations or an intermediate player looking to sharpen your technique, this episode delivers actionable coaching insight you can take straight to the court.
Jack covers the essential ready position and split step that gives you the reaction time to move into every shot with balance and intent. He walks through the mechanics of both the forehand and backhand groundstroke, explaining why compact swings, body rotation, and early preparation are far more effective than relying on arm strength alone. The episode also explores the padel slice, one of the most underused yet highly effective weapons in the game, and explains exactly how and when to deploy it to keep your opponents on the back foot.
One of the key themes of this episode is the balance between power and precision. Jack explains why patient, well-placed shots almost always outperform attempts to hit outright winners from deep, and how understanding the glass walls and court geometry can make you a smarter, more strategic player.
You will also find a practical cross-court groundstroke drill you can use in your next training session to build consistency and court awareness simultaneously.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Master the Shots, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of padel's most exciting and technically demanding strokes: the vibora. Whether you're an intermediate player looking to add variety to your overhead game or a club-level competitor wanting to understand the mechanics behind this deceptive shot, this episode delivers clear, actionable insight.
Jack covers the three essential pillars of a great vibora: spin generation, trajectory control, and precise timing. Listeners will learn how sidespin is produced through a lateral brushing motion and wrist snap with a continental grip, and why this spin causes such unpredictable behaviour when the ball interacts with the glass walls. The episode also tackles the common trajectory mistakes players make when first attempting the vibora, explaining why the right angle and height matter more than raw power.
Timing is explored in depth, with Jack emphasising why early footwork and patience at the contact point are often more important than the swing itself. The episode closes with practical advice on when to deploy the vibora tactically versus other overhead options like the bandeja or smash.
Perfect for padel players of all levels who want to decode advanced shots and build a more complete game.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Master the Shots, host Jack Mercer delivers a comprehensive bandeja masterclass — breaking down the shot that many coaches and players consider the true defining skill of padel. Whether you're a beginner who keeps shanking overheads or an intermediate player looking to add tactical depth to your net game, this episode gives you everything you need to understand and develop one of padel's most essential techniques.
Jack covers the origins of the word bandeja and why the "waiter with a tray" analogy is the most useful mental image for getting your technique right. He explains exactly when to use the bandeja versus a full smash, helping you make smarter decisions in real match situations. The episode goes deep into the mechanics: footwork and positioning, continental grip, the sliced contact point that generates low-bouncing spin, abbreviated follow-through, and ideal shot placement toward the side and back glass corners.
You'll also learn the tactical purpose of the bandeja — why it's a defensive-to-neutral shot designed to neutralise quality lobs, maintain net position, and reset the rally on your terms rather than gifting your opponents an easy putaway. Jack shares a practical low-pressure training drill to build bandeja muscle memory and explains how to recover quickly back to the net after the shot.
Perfect for club players, social padel enthusiasts, and competitive amateurs looking to improve their overhead game and overall padel IQ.
