24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Beginner to Intermediate, host Jack Mercer dives deep into one of the most transformative skills in padel: reading your opponent. Whether you're just moving beyond the basics or looking to sharpen your intermediate game, learning to spot patterns and react sooner can completely change how you experience every match.
Jack breaks down the key cues every padel player should be watching for, from pre-contact body positioning and shoulder rotation to the subtle eye movements that telegraph shot direction. He explains how padel's unique glass walls create additional opportunities to profile opponents and exploit their comfort zones or weaknesses on rebounds.
One of the core themes of this episode is the shift from reactive to predictive thinking. Jack outlines how beginners typically focus inward on their own mechanics, and how intermediate players begin to look outward, building mental profiles of opponents across a match. He explains why the early games of any match should be treated as an information-gathering phase and how those observations pay off in the later stages.
Listeners will also get practical advice on how to train anticipation skills during practice sessions, including shadow movement drills and deliberate observation exercises. Jack also highlights the value of post-match communication between doubles partners as a tool for building a more complete tactical picture.
This episode is perfect for padel players who want to play smarter, move more efficiently, and stop feeling like every ball is a surprise. Tune in and start seeing the game through new eyes.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Beginner to Intermediate, host Jack Mercer dives deep into one of the most common challenges facing beginner and developing padel players: consistency. If you find yourself giving away unforced errors and handing free points to your opponents, this episode is essential listening.
Jack breaks down exactly why unforced errors happen, from poor shot selection and rushing to end rallies too early, to technical mistakes like failing to bend the knees when playing low balls. He explains why padel rewards patience more than many other racket sports and how keeping the ball in play is itself a powerful tactical strategy.
Listeners will learn practical techniques for reducing errors, including how to simplify shot selection under pressure, how to improve net clearance by getting lower for low balls, and how to use the central reset drill to train a safer, more reliable default shot. Jack also covers the mental side of consistency, exploring how urgency and pressure can push players into making worse decisions and how a simple mindset shift can transform the way you approach a rally.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Beginner to Intermediate, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most exciting skills in padel — adding disguise to your drop shots and lobs. Whether you're a club player looking to stop being predictable or an intermediate working on building tactical sequences, this episode delivers clear, actionable advice to elevate your game.
Jack covers the core principle of the preparation illusion — how keeping your backswing and body position identical for both power shots and touch shots makes your play far harder to read. He walks through the mechanics of a disguised drop shot, explaining exactly when to slow the hand, open the racket face, and use soft contact to create a shot that dies in the front corners. He also explains the ideal moment to deploy the drop shot based on your opponents' court positioning.
The episode then moves into lob technique, covering how to disguise a lob as a drive, the importance of lift angle at the point of contact, and why height and depth are critical to making the lob effective rather than an easy overhead opportunity for your opponents. Jack also introduces the side lob as a tactical weapon.
The big takeaway from this episode is thinking in combinations — using lobs to push opponents back and drops to pull them forward, creating court imbalances that win points. Jack encourages players to think two shots ahead rather than reacting one ball at a time.
Perfect for beginner to intermediate padel players looking to add deception, variation, and tactical awareness to their game.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Beginner to Intermediate, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most overlooked fundamentals in padel: the ready position. Whether you're a complete beginner or working your way toward an intermediate level, understanding where you stand on the court and how your body is set up between shots can make a dramatic difference to your overall game.
Jack walks through every element of the perfect ready position, from foot placement and knee bend to racket height and court positioning. You'll learn why keeping your weight on the balls of your feet is essential for quick movement, why your racket should never hang by your side while you're waiting, and how the split step can transform your reaction time and court coverage.
The episode also covers doubles positioning, explaining where you should be standing depending on whether your team is serving or returning, and how your proximity to the net affects your ability to control a point.
This is the kind of foundational knowledge that coaches emphasise repeatedly because it underpins everything else in your game. Clean groundstrokes, effective volleys, and smart movement all start with being in the right place with the right posture.
Perfect for beginner padel players, intermediate players looking to tighten up their technique, and anyone who wants to understand the tactical side of court positioning.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Beginner to Intermediate, host Jack Mercer dives deep into one of the most overlooked fundamentals of padel: footwork. Whether you are a complete beginner or a club player looking to level up, understanding how to move efficiently on a padel court can completely transform your game.
Jack breaks down the core footwork patterns every padel player needs to develop, including the recovery step, the split step, the side shuffle, and the crossover step. He explains the timing behind each movement, why the split step is so critical for reaction time, and how arriving at the ball in a balanced position is just as important as getting there in the first place.
The episode also covers movement near the back glass, one of the trickiest aspects of padel that separates club players from more experienced competitors. Jack offers practical, easy-to-follow guidance on how to retreat to the glass and collect the ball with confidence rather than panic.

24 JUN 2026 · In this episode of Padel Up: Beginner to Intermediate, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most overlooked skills in padel — the return of serve. Whether you're a complete beginner or a developing club player, understanding how to return with intention can completely change how you experience a match.
Jack covers the key principles behind an effective padel return, starting with court positioning before the serve even lands. He explains why standing too deep is a common mistake and how moving closer to the service box helps you meet the ball at a more comfortable and controllable height.
The episode then explores the importance of the split step, a simple footwork habit that separates reactive players from proactive ones. Jack also dives into the two primary return options available to intermediate players — the lob return and the driven return — explaining when to use each one, what to aim for, and how to measure success beyond just getting the ball back in play.
Finally, Jack addresses the mental side of returning, offering a practical mindset shift that helps players move from survival mode into active, intentional play from the very first shot of the rally.
This episode is perfect for padel beginners looking to improve their consistency, intermediate players wanting to add structure to their return game, and anyone who has ever felt like matches happen to them rather than being shaped by them.

The padel serve is one of the most misunderstood shots in the game. Unlike tennis, padel rules require an underarm serve with contact made at or below waist height, which means power is never the priority. Topics covered in this episode include the correct continental grip for serving, how to develop a consistent ball bounce routine, the difference between a flat serve and a slice serve, how spin affects the ball after it hits the back glass, smart target selection within the service box, and how to build a pre-serve mental routine to stay calm under pressure.
