Welcome to MYgration. Together, we're going to meet several people that, for a variety of reasons, left their own countries and came to the Netherlands. For some this could be an ongoing journey — they could become migrants again — and for some, the Netherlands has become a new home. They will be answering the question, “What is my migration story?” and we will be listening.
In today’s world, immigrants are increasingly facing problems and are often unwelcome, misunderstood and denied a voice. With this collaboration between the non-profit organisations; Stichting Correspondents of the World, Wijdoenmee, and Stichting Broadcast Amsterdam, we want to explore the large spectrum behind the word “migration”, and the personal stories involved.

Hi, I'm Ghada. This is my story.
26 MAR 2024 · An interview with Ghada Bahri for the MYgration podcast series. Ghada was born in Damascus, Syria in 1965. Her family moved to Aleppo soon after. There she completed high school, graduated as an English teacher and got married. Ghada taught English all over Syria – from Idlib to As-Suwayda to Deir ez-Zor – while raising her six children. When her eldest son finished high school and was at risk of conscription, she fled to Turkey with her family. After living in Turkey for over three years working as an English teacher, Ghada and her children were granted asylum in the Netherlands. Now retired, Ghada shares Syrian food with her local community in the Netherlands and cares for her garden. For Ghada, the Netherlands is home.

MYgration seeks to bridge this divide through providing a space where people can share migratory stories in their own words and on their own terms. In doing so, MYgration offers a multi-dimensional portrait of the ‘migrant experience’.

26 MAR 2024 · An interview with Shi for the MYgration podcast series. Shi came to the Netherlands from China with her parents in 2015. As Christians they were no longer safe and had to flee. Shi is currently active at the Worldhouse (Wereldhuis), a place where people without a valid residence permit can go to receive support and meet other people.

26 MAR 2024 · An interview with Pavel for the MYgration podcast series. Pavel and Evgenii came to the Netherlands in 2018. They fled their home country Russia after threats from the Russian government regarding their gay marriage. After living in Asylum Seeker Centers for 6 months, they received a residence permit and home in Nijmegen. Pavel works as a doctor at a mental health clinic, after completing his entire medical studies in Dutch. Evgenii works as a case manager at a social institution in Nijmegen. Both plan to stay in the Netherlands.

Max came to the Netherlands in 1951 as a toddler, because his father had served in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army (KNIL). The Papilaja-Wattimena family lived in camps for 19 years before they were given a house. Max now lives in Huizen. As a board member of the Happy Green Islands Foundation, he helps and supports the Moluccas

26 MAR 2024 · An interview with Asia (also known as Isjed) for the MYgration podcast series. Asia was born and raised in Brabant, her parents are from Pakistan. She feels like a migrant on several levels: culturally, ethnically, but also with regard to gender and sexuality. She now lives and works mainly in Utrecht and Amsterdam, but also sometimes internationally. Asia founded the Prisma Group Foundation to support BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and LGBTQIA+.

She lives in Leidschendam-Voorburg, has two sons, and is actively committed to the organization Foundation for Intercultural Promotion of Contact & Education.
