14 SEP 2018 · In late March, early April timeframe, I experienced this weird phenomenon called... Well, I don't know what to call it other than misplaced idealism turned into self-righteous indignation. Because I showed insufficient remorse for what seemed like a dumb question on my Facebook group dealing with women trumpet players, I endured the wrath of a couple of female trumpet players who took exception to my response to the question - or lack thereof.
While the whole thing was pretty silly, there were a couple of things that in retrospect I could have done differently. To put it bluntly: nothing. I would have done nothing. But we all have to learn hard lessons in whatever we're endeavoring to do, and I guess it was just my turn to be in the hot seat for a week or so.
I share with my three listeners, Glenn, Stu and Shaniqua, what went down and what I would do differently the next time I encounter a similar situation.

18 AUG 2018 · Day 8-Physical health.
Without good physical health it is difficult to focus. What areas can you improve on?
Exercise
Make a list of your current exercise items and the amount of time per day that you spend on it. People like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have superior focus and goal achieving abilities because of their physical health. Dwayne starts his serious workout routine at 4:30 am.
Now make notes beside your list of how you can improve. If you wrote down that you ride your bike for 30 minutes a day, ask yourself how much did your heart rate increase? Did you sweat? Are your muscles tired…a good tired that will promote a healthy sleep?
If you're just easy riding, strive to change it. Pick a different route with some hills. Or change your speed.
If you go for a leisurely stroll in the morning, force yourself to go faster. Go slow, sprint, slow down and sprint again.
Set a timer and say you're going to walk a mile in 15 minutes. Or run it in 8 minutes.
Download an app on your phone that will count the number of steps you take during the day. Strive to walk at least 10,000 steps.
When you force yourself to overcome physical resistance while exercising, you'll be better able to overcome mental, emotional and spiritual resistance in your life.
Do a complete survey of your physical regime now.
What about rest?
Are you making a point of being in bed by a certain time, then waking up at a certain time? That's far better than simply working until you're exhausted, then waking up just a few hours later.
I recommend an app called "Sleep Cycle." It's $4 on the app store. It will wake you up during the part of your sleep cycle that you're the most alert, rather than jolting you out of deep REM sleep. Then it gives you a score, 1-100 of your sleep quality.
How are you eating?
Just whatever is on sale at Wendy's or McDonald's? How much green stuff are you eating? Try eating more plants than animals for just one week and see if you don't feel amazing!
Being aware of our physical health, and by tweaking just a few things in our exercise, sleep and eating routines, we can increase our ability to focus exponentially.
Don't be haphazard with how you eat, sleep and exercise for it will translate directly into how you do your work.
17 AUG 2018 · Day 7- Mental Health.
Today we will look at your mental health and ask questions about what thoughts are most common in your mind? Take inventory of your negative thoughts. How do you cope with difficult situations, either in life or in your work?
In your notebook, write down the common negative thoughts that you are fully aware of right now. For example, perhaps you're in the habit of constantly stating, “I can’t. I shouldn’t. Wouldn’t it have been great if I had done this instead.”
Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda.
These types of statements that many people say to themselves embed themselves into the brain and quickly cause drudgery and burnout. In more cases than we're probably aware of, depression and anxiety.
You become unable to put your total focus in a task for your work because you are unable to stay on track. You drift into the realm of, “Wow, this is hard, I just can’t do it.”
When that starts to happen, it can snowball and become an avalanche of remembering times that you were unable to do something and just gave up.
You need to change the statements.
For example, “I can’t,” becomes “This is giving me some grief right now, what is causing this difficulty?”
All of a sudden, you're on a quest to figure out the root cause of the difficulty. Rather than throwing your hands up in despair, you're now a man on a mission.
And you know what? So many times it's just a tweak here or there in one small aspect of our work that's causing the hangup. Once you identify that tweak and make the necessary adjustments, you're on your way to not only completing your work but CRUSHING your work.
When your mental game is not on point, you not only suffer from the “I cannot,” you open your self up to having a serious bout of depression.
If you are feeling sad and out of sorts frequently, make a list of what you feel may be causing it. Are you eating properly, exercising, talking out your frustrations with family or friends? Are you harboring resentment and anger against someone who has wronged you?
These are your first go-to things to do when you aren't feeling great on the inside.
Lift yourself up with positive affirmations. Read inspiring books like the Bible or other sacred texts.
Forgive the person who has wronged you. Harboring anger against someone is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.
Sing an uplifting song to yourself. Tell a joke. Give a word of encouragement to someone else who's going through a difficulty.
Make a charitable contribution.
Soon you realize you've actually got it pretty good.
Of course, it never hurts to see your doctor and get some advice. Explain how you feel and how it hurts your ability to focus on the truly important things in life.
16 AUG 2018 · Day 6-
External family, friends and co-workers for the most part are cooperative and not negative. To be clear, external family means we are talking about someone other than a spouse or your own children such as a brother, uncle, cousin, etc.
There is usually one or two that do not add value to your life. In fact, they drain you of your energy and ability to focus.
See if there's a way to improve relations with those who are borderline. Consider removing those who will continue to have a negative impact on your focus and energy.
Take the time to make three lists. External family-Friends-Coworkers.
Use your scale out of ten to rate each person on the three lists. Now find the low scoring ones. Those would be the ones who cause you to lose focus by impacting you with negative words or actions. They might demand your time because they want to offload their work onto yours.
Everyone has a relative who constantly needs others to do things for them. A ride somewhere or they want their kids picked up by someone else. Friends who day in and day out bombard you with the story of how their significant other is ruining their life.
These people are not adding value to your life. They are slowly sucking your energy like a leech on a fat puppy.
How about co-workers (or band mates) who drop a load of work in your lap and then tell you a sob story of why they're unable to complete the task and if you were truly a team player, you would take care of it.
The best way to handle all these folks is gently but firmly. Give them the things you love about them and then gently advise them of some changes they must make in order for you to focus and succeed.
If they're unable to see the need to change, it's time to limit your interactions with them.
15 AUG 2018 · Day 5-Relationships.
What you can do to focus on your significant other and improve your relationship? This is super important. If you are not putting a great deal of focus into your relationship, everything else is going to suffer too.
Know of anyone in a bad relationship, that is able to focus on their job and excel? There are not many people that can do that. It’s impossible to focus and be productive in your work when you went to bed angry at your significant other.
"Let not the sun go down on your wrath." Ephesians 4:26
When you fall asleep angry, your sub-conscious is going to dwell on the issue that has made you angry. When you wake up, you're not going to be in a place of wanting to reconcile. In fact, your heart is going to harden. It's going to be that much more difficult to come to a resolution.
Rate your current relationship with your significant other on our usual scale. How happy are you with your rating? If you are feeling discomfort, then that means you have some work to do. List out the items that make you unhappy with your partner. Then list out what you believe your partner would put in their list.
These are the items you need to focus on. For instance, in your list, if you wrote down that your partner spends four to five hours a night watching television, while you believe that their time could be spent doing more edifying things, then something has to change.
Work with your partner to cut down on viewing time. Suggest something that you can both engage in and enjoy spending time together.
In the list of things your partner might not like in you, you wrote that you have your cellphone in your hand constantly. Visit the reason why you are always checking your phone. Is it serious business or randomly checking to see who is upset with who on Flakebook? Put your cell phone on vibrate, put it in the other room, and then focus on your partner and engage in meaningful conversation and quality time together.
Perhaps your "significant other" is a child. It's not necessarily a spouse or even an adult for that matter. Focus on how your time with that most important relationship can be the best relationship possible. Focus on yourself first, how you can make the best possible relationship, then gently suggest ways your partner can better engage with you in your relationship.
15 AUG 2018 · Day 4-
What are you passionate about? I mean, what would you be doing even if you didn't get paid?
Average people settle for a job they think they're passionate about - or perhaps were passionate about 20 years ago. But whatever passion that was there is gone and they're holding out for retirement or some other carrot that may or may not be there at the time they think it will be there.
But you're not average. If you were, you wouldn't be reading this blog.
It’s time to write down what you are passionate about and how you could make a living doing it.
It doesn't mean you're going to quit your day job and pursue your dream. That's not wise. You can boost your income while staying at your old job, while you evaluate the success of the passionate job.
Make a list now. Write down your current job and then the careers you think that you could be passionate about.
Then beside each one, rate them on a scale of one to ten. Which job could you focus on 100%? If your current job is rated four out of ten and you have a passion for something like, I don't know, say... Music? and it's rated 11 out of 10, then it’s time to revisit your life goals. Determine where you really want to put your focus and achieve happiness.
Make a goal, then make small goals that will lead up to that ultimate success: You're paying all your bills and building wealth doing what you know in your heart you were put on this earth to do.
