1 OCT 2024 · On the latest edition of the "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast," hosts T.J. Rives and Mike Gill return to give extended thoughts and analysis on the latest in sports media, ratings and more. That includies:
Another big NFL weekend that included Tom Brady returning to Tampa to go broadcast the Buccaneers-Philly game nationally for Fox Sports. Is he improving? And, which host thinks Tony Romo is better/more engaged this year on the CBS national calls?Â
College football keeps scoring in the ratings on Fridays- we have the latest. Alabama-Georgia Saturday night was an EPIC regular season game and the guys go over ESPN's prime time crew and production matching the play on the field, too.
The guys also discuss the mid-week start to the postseason in MILB with the wildcard round of action getting going on ABC and ESPN over Tuesday and Wendesday. Mike goes over those who are calling the games for them, too.
There's talk about the ratings for the WNBA playoffs and whether they will take a larger hit with Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever being out? This, despite the Las Vegas Aces going for a "3 peat" this year.
And, the guys have thoughts on the complicated story of Pete Rose and his baseball banishment that includes not being formally in the hall of fame. This upon his death on Monday.

30 SEP 2024 · Off the final weekend of September with plenty of NFL, College Football, the MLB regular season concluding, etc., we're back in a new week with the latest of our "Daily" podcasts.
Host T.J. Rives returns with insight and takes on:
The "Fail Mary Part II" last second play in the Miami-Virginia Tech playoff game that saw the Hokies apparently catch the winning TD, have it called a TD with no time left and then, overturned on replay by the ACC command center for a Hurricanes win to remain unbeaten. How did the ESPN broadcasters and crew handle it?
Then, a tremendous finish for Alabama and Georgia in a wild SEC game between two top teams and a game that will likely be the SEC title game and maybe even a College Football Playoff game, too. How was that coverage?
Then, there's NFL, including Tom Brady's return to Tampa Bay with the Fox Sports #1 crew to broadcast the Bucs thumping of the Eagles Sunday afternoon. And, what about Jim Nantz and Tony Romo calling the Chiefs/Chargers game nationally for CBS, as well?
T.J. has more on the WNBA and Disney/ESPN/ABC not releasing any ratings info on Monday of this week on the Las Vegas Aces/NY Liberty afternoon game that went head to head with the NFL. However, they DID release on Monday afternoo the large audience (for them) that watched Caitlin Clark's playoff debut for Indiana against Connecticut last Sunday against the NFL. It's interesting and potentially an indication that the numbers weren't nearly as good and maybe, won't be without the transcendent Clark still playing.Â
There's also baseball wildcard mayhem still playing out with a Mets at Braves doubleheader Monday and the Arizona Diamondbacks waiting for the loser of both games to potentially put them in the post season. And, T.J. has more on the Wildcard games coming this week on ESPN networks and ABC too.

Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit blasting the refs on Thursday night football gets high marks from him
Where will former ESPN.com senior NBA writer Zach Lowe end up next? Mike has the odds!
Plus, props for Jason Benetti and his ‘beautiful call’ during Tigers’ improbable run to the post-season and the Oakland A's final home game coverage, as well.

26 SEP 2024 · It's the Thursday edition of the "daily" on the podcast feed and host T.J. Rives returns, while keeping an eye on Hurricane Helene roaring just west of him in the Gulf of Mexico and towards the panhandle of Florida, then into Georgia Friday.
While staying safe, T.J. discusses and reports on:
Caitlin Clark and her amazing story with the WNBA's Indiana Fever and their surging audience and attendance has come to an end for this season, as they were eliminated from the playoffs by the Connecticut Sun Wednesday night. What will this do to the overall audience, including the Las Vegas Aces going for a 3 peat?
Also, there's breaking news about ESPN/ESPN.com doing away with another prominent media member from their staff. We have more.
And, it's a big night for Amazon Prime as the Dallas Cowboys (the #1 draw in T.V. Sports by far) will play at the New York Giants Thursday night. Will this game smash audience highs for their football package? Will Al Michaels be enthused (as he should) to call this matchup?
We go over it all on the newest "Last Word on Sports Media Daily" and make sure to follow/subscribe to thiis feed for all the content on Apple/Spreaker/Spotify, etc.
25 SEP 2024 · It's the newest edtion of our Monday-Friday "daily" pod, Mike Gill is back with news involving NFL announcers and the Netflix Christmas Day broadcasts, the solid year that Sunday night baseball has put together for ESPN and what longtime Sportscenter anchor is now going to work part time with an NHL team?
Mike has more on how Fox Sports has reportedly denied Netflix's request to use their #1 team of Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady for one of their Christmas Day broadcasts coming up. What will the streamer that paid hundreds of millions for the two games end up doing for commentators?
Also, the ESPN/ABC Monday night doubleheader scored with audience, especially the Washington Commanders/Cincinnati Bengals game on ABC.Â
And guess who was back in the New York Yankees radio booth, just in time for the upcoming post season and also to call another Aaron Judge home run? Why, it was John Sterling on Tuesday night. Mike has more and his take on whether the Yankees are doing the right or wrong thing for the other announcers and confused fans by having Sterling unretire at the very end of the season?

24 SEP 2024 · Lots of football, both NFL and college, but some mix of the WNBA playoffs succeeding and some announcers doing it well are all part of the latest "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast."
Host T.J. Rives returns with co-host Mike Gill to go over it all, including how did Tom Brady do on Fox Sports with his latest broadcast this past Sunday of Baltimore Ravens at Dallas Cowboys? The guys also talk whether the Monday night doubleheader for ESPN/ABC should become a permanent thing and which announce crew for the NFL does Mike really enjoy the best?
They also go over the college football numbers and how CBS won the week with the first ever USC vs. Michigan Big Ten regular season game in their afternoon slot. Is there SEC fatigue costing ESPN/ABC some audience? Although, it should rebound for Alabama and Georgia this coming Saturay? And, does the public care less now about "Coach Prime" and Colorado?
And, they also talk the WNBA playoffs going head to head with an NFL Sunday slate of acition and actually getting some audience (mostly due to Caitlin Clark playing). But, shouldn't they have been playing all of their games on Sunday night?
Finally, the guys sallute a couple of play by play guys who have been doing it well on the big time level with their calls last week.

Host T.J. Rives and co-host Mike Gill return to give the info and their takes on the compelling sports media stories and news for the week. That includes:
DirecTV got it's renewal deal with Disney/ESPN/ABC. Why did it happen and did they really get any thing in the standoff? The guys give the update.
Did ESPN Monday Night Football go too overboard with their praising and promoting of former Eagles center Jason Kelce on Monday night. He's a Superbowl hero in Philly and returned as part of their pregame coverage but he was on, over and over and over, with everything they did. That includes him being in the booth for a bunch of the 3rd and 4th quater with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. Mike and T.J. have thoughts.
Next, was Tom Brady better in the Fox Sports TV booth Sunday wiht Saints/Cowboys? Mike saw it and was a harsh critic last week of his debut. Did he think Brady did beter?
What college football scored the best audience last week? It's not surprising.
