Welcome to The Wild of the Word’s Folktrails podcast! My name is Pridie Tiernan and I’m going to be taking you outdoors with story, and stories outdoors! This podcast is all about blending walking with folklore – to relax, entertain, inspire and empower us all to get back out to the wild places, the untamed spaces and to breathe life into the multidimensional landscapes we encounter when we step outside!
Today’s episode is Number 1 in my mini series – it’s called Berries, cheese and dreams because there were so many blackberries still to be eaten when I wrote the original blog and because the folktale that really felt right for that week, started with a young woman picking blaeberries and went on to involve both cheese and dreams!
It’s coming to you live from the Somerset countryside and I’ll be walking while I’m talking! As well as sharing a little bit of folklore about berries and a beautiful Scottish folktale, keep an ear out for some tips on who to follow and look up if you want to learn more about the folklore, the stories, the wild food foraging and story-inspired outdoor activities that I chat about today! It’s all on the blog at www.thewildofthewords.co.uk

5 AUG 2022 · Folktrails blog & podcast series is all about walking and storying the outdoors - sharing the folklore and stories connected to our native trees, plants and creatures. I want to map the repeating and healing refrains of nature with words and wanderings - to revive that magical entanglement we all sense is there when we step into the wild world outside. This episode introduces the enigmatic and elemental alder tree...
18 DEC 2020 · Today’s episode is number 4 of my Folktrails podcast series – it’s based on the blog post I wrote in the last week of our November lockdown and I felt like I ought to finish my little blog series with some water-based escapism! It was actually really wet in that last week and winter arrived properly for us over here in the west, and it’s actually pouring again today which – while it’s not the gorgeous weather we all appreciate on walks, it fits my theme perfectly! Today, I’m walking by the sea because I’m going to be sharing some water folklore and a selkie sea tale...

13 DEC 2020 · I’m calling this episode - ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ because today I’m creeping about in my local woods and looking for some of the little and big creatures that live here! While Brock and I walk today, I’m going to share some animal folklore with you, tell a gorgeous story about a curing fox and provide ideas about how we can get ourselves and our kids back out into the wild - to 'attune ourselves to its magic and recapture its enchantments!'

5 DEC 2020 · Today’s episode is the second in my Folktrails podcast series – it’s called 'Trees, seeds and rivers of milk' because today I’m going to walk with, and talk about TREES - these quiet giants, benevolent witnesses of history and time that, when we spend time with them, can actually reduce anxiety, fatigue, depression and boost our mood, immunity, creativity and even the amount of kindness we show towards others!
It’s actually National Tree week so this feels very timely! While Brock and I walk I’m going to share a little bit of tree folklore and talk about an ancient alphabet that has been linked to trees more recently over the last century (and some argue even before then!) I’m also going to ask one of my favourite storytellers to share a story with you about a particularly famous mythological tree and chat about some of the things I get up to, and my family get up to, when we step outside inspired by story!
