A show exploring and unpacking potential design improvement opportunities in our everyday world, one frustrating experience at a time. Hosted by @geoffwilsonHCD
24 MAY 2023 · Geoff discovers Guy’s fascination and revelations on the careful balance of utility, durability, aesthetics, and business drivers behind your everyday bag design. This is [likely] the last exploration episode of single-topic products/services before we begin a new run of more design-topic centred episodes.
Highlights include:
💡 Is designing the ‘perfect’ bag actually the fastest way for manufacturers to go out of business?
💡 Why is there a difference between bags seen in stores and what people are carrying?
💡 How do bags both afford and constrain our everyday experiences?
💡 Do aesthetics or utility spark more joy for consumers?
💡 How might bag designs be future-proofed for ever-changing tech?
Originally recorded on 24 June 2022.

5 DEC 2022 · Geoff and Guy both acknowledge and lament the challenges in getting airlines and international travel "back to the way it was", particularly in regard to all the extra security and forms being required to arrive or depart a country. However, let's all ignore the fact that this episode is being released 6 months after it was recorded together in person since many of the discussed restrictions have now been lifted - timeliness is not our strong suit, but the points are relevant nonetheless.
Highlights include:
💡 When and where should you choose to make your customers wait?
💡 Whose responsibility is it to complete all due diligence requirement checks before departing?
💡 Can proactive communications to set customer expectations actually be harmful?
💡 What role can we as passengers play in driving the change we want to see?

11 SEP 2022 · Geoff and Guy are finally back and recording together in person for the first time... from a phone... in a car. If you like your podcasts to really put you in the context of the moment, this episode is for you - road noise and all.
Highlights include:
💡 How can we make asking for product help more approachable?
💡 How can we drive in-store sales through service propositions?
💡 How can we reduce the feeling of elitism with specialty stores and services?
💡 What benefits might we see by paying a little extra for professional installation?

29 MAR 2022 · The local designer series continues with Lulu Pachuau giving a mother's perspective of the pros and cons of three different methods of family travel along with the little tweaks and wins that could really make for a more pleasant experience.
Highlights include:
💡 What are the risks of missing the "nested problems"?
💡 How do you design for the little touches people never forget?
💡 Which types of users should we pay attention to more?
💡 Why is it important to apply positive emotional connections with different experiences to what you're designing?
💡 What is the more important decision factor: the brand or how fast needs are met?

21 FEB 2022 · Geoff and Guy return to talk about web browsers without even once saying "surfing the web" (so of course it had to be squeezed into the episode title). From checking emails to watching videos and purchasing products, we use these ubiquitous tools multiple times a day, so we thought they deserved a deeper look and a moment to consider why we aren’t readily seeing if a different one would better meet our needs.
Highlights include:
💡 What do we miss out on by being complacent with what we're used to using?
💡 Should we be more exploratory with our everyday tools?
💡 What's the easiest way to try out a new browser?
💡 How can the digital products and services we make be improved by us trying out a different browser for a week?

25 JAN 2022 · Kicking off our new Local Designer series, Janice Chan joins Geoff to explore the most niche topic: utensils. But, if there's ever a topic worth finding design and business opportunities in, it's noticing the individual usefulness of the countless variety of these tools we use daily.
Highlights include:
💡 How cultural differences influence the design of our everyday tools
💡 What business opportunities arise when designing products for longevity
💡 How material choices impacts experiences and brand identities
💡 How sustainable practices can save both the environment and material costs
💡 Are sporks the ultimate utensil or an absolute failure?

20 DEC 2021 · Guy is back with Geoff to explore the design villainy behind shopping mall layouts and the bombardment of product eye candy that serves to make us lose track of our original goals and spend, spend, spend! Listen in to better recognise what nefarious design choices you’re subconsciously up against so you can be a more intentional consumer.
Highlights include:
💡 What is a Gruen Transfer and how does it make us more susceptible to impulse buying?
💡 How can we better design wayfinding experiences in physical spaces with the help of technology?
💡 Why are malls dying in some places but not in others?
💡 How can retail shopping be blended with online fulfilment to radically change the shopping experience?

3 AUG 2021 · Geoff and Guy team up together again to verbally trade barbs and laugh way too much whilst discussing the act and factors behind upgrading our physical and digital products. They just don't make 'em like they used to anymore.
Highlights include:
💡 How do "anticipointments" shape our future expectations?
💡 What is "planned obsolescence"?
💡 When and why should we upgrade our products or services?
💡 How do non-digital products like appliances compare to new digital releases?
💡 How can we start improving our liveable environment in this throw-away consumer culture?

8 JUL 2021 · Doug Collins joins Geoff to talk about the careful balance between designing for customers versus users, but in this case, the customers being parents and users being their children. Listen in to how we can "keep the good moving forward."
Highlights include:
💡 What factors go into "good" products made for kids?
💡 Is there such a thing as "ethical consumerism"?
💡 How does the loss of a tactile toy shopping impact the experience?
💡 What is "Hanlon's Razor" and how does it relate to addictive toy design?
💡 How can we encourage educationally-constructive curiosity and sustainability?
