Join me this Sunday as I talk about how to manage the frustration that comes with seeing the scale go up as you were working hard on your fitness journey.

When you start lifting weights, especially if you're new to resistance training, it's common for the scale not to show immediate changes or even to show an increase in weight. This occurs due to several reasons:

1. Muscle Gain: Lifting weights stimulates muscle growth. Muscle tissue is denser than fat tissue, meaning that even as you lose fat, you may gain muscle mass. This can result in a situation where your body weight remains stable or even increases slightly, despite positive changes in body composition.
2. Water Retention: Introducing new exercises, particularly strength training, can cause temporary water retention as muscles repair and adapt to the stress of exercise. This temporary increase in water weight can mask any fat loss that might be occurring.
3. Fat Loss vs. Muscle Gain: While you may be losing fat, the increase in muscle mass can offset the reduction in fat weight on the scale. This phenomenon underscores the importance of tracking changes in body composition (such as measuring body fat percentage) rather than relying solely on the scale.

In summary, the scale doesn't always reflect progress accurately when starting a weightlifting program due to the simultaneous processes of muscle gain and potential water retention. Monitoring overall changes in body composition and physical measurements alongside weight can provide a more comprehensive view of your progress towards fitness goals.
