The first in-depth genomic surveillance of E.coli in the Punjab region of Pakistan has revealed surprising differences in the bacterial strains found compared to the UK, Norway and the USA. Certain antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria endemic to the UK, Norway and the USA have not taken hold in Pakistan despite the widespread use of antibiotics in this region. The new study, published recently in Nature Communications, also showed that the E.coli strains responsible for many urinary tract infections, and common in countries including the UK, are not found in the Punjab region.
