Few things are more dangerous than uncontrolled and unwarranted speculation, but the one thing that may surpass such danger is the notion that certain forms of reasonable speculation are without question never allowed no matter the situation or context. By no means do we know what happened internally to Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin on Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals, but without considering all options how can any professional physician seriously make proper diagnosis without relying solely on dogma rather than science? Is such faith-based reliance not more dangerous than considering all options? Isn't speculation, after all, part of the scientific process? Observation and hypothesis lead one to make predictions, gather data, analyze that data, and then draw conclusions. Conclusions can then be matched against the original hypothesis and theory, which should be changed to match the evidence, if needed, rather than the other way around when evidence is altered to match the theory. If this is how media, medicine, and politicians make decisions, how can we trust anything that anyone says? Such an undermining of free thought and speculation is the anthesis of the scientific process and more akin to mind control. In fact, when speculation is ruled out based on dogma we are asked to believe in magic, that rare circumstances and a rare situation aligned like planetary bodies to produce an unheard of affect. On the other hand, it is likewise as foolish to absolutely state that the cause is known from something other than what 'experts' are willing to admit.
