A Trip to the Himalayas - Travel Series - Sahidya Devadoss

Travelers around the world probably associate colorful and vibrant fabric, stunning jewelry, and Bollywood-style song and dance with India. While that is completely justified, it is also true that the natural wonders of India take a back seat to the man-made marvels for most people as they think, talk, and visit India. In this episode, our guest Sahidya Devadoss shares both figurative and literal twists and turns she experienced during her journey in the Himalayas. Residents of Wayland, Sahidya and her husband, feeling the need to explore the country they were born in a little bit more, embark upon the hike of a lifetime.

As Sahidya narrates the story, she discusses her hike through

•Hardwar. The holy city in India where the journey begins. And, Ghangaria, a makeshift village that only exists in the Summer. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haridwar].
•The Ganges. The holy river that is their constant companion through the hike. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganges]
•Joan Margaret Legge. A botanist whose grave inspires and captivates our traveler. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Margaret_Legge]
•Valley of Flowers. The destination, which leaves our narrator speechless. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_of_Flowers_National_Park]
•The Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund. Wayland organization promoting healthy teen relationships, the arts, and community service. [https://laurendunneastleymemorialfund.org/]

Endnote:

As we publish this episode, more than 135,000 people in the US and half a million people worldwide have fallen to Covid-19, with global cases standing at more than 13 million. In the United States, we are also facing a different kind of fight, one against racism. Women of Wayland Podcast stands in solidarity with our black countrymen and women. We condemn the shootings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breanna Taylor, and countless others. We have covered the silent protests in our town on our social media pages and will continue to shed light on this de fining issue of our times.

Black Lives Matter. Plain and simple.

After completing our 1st season successfully last year, we continued our work on new stories and recordings. But as we all know, the world came to a standstill because of Covid-19. All of our in-person work had to be put on hold. So, we decided we will bring you stories through other virtual platforms. Our Instagram Takeovers brought you stories of women from our neighborhood and all around the world. And, I am happy to report that our episodes are now available on YouTube as well.

In these unprecedented times, it is so important to support each other and our local communities. This year, we won a prestigious grant from Lauren Dunn Astley Memorial fund, a non-pro it that works to promote healthy teen relationships, arts, and community service. This grant helped us produce the episodes this season and giveaway free ad spots to our local businesses in these financially stressful times. The Women of Wayland Podcast wants to give a big shout out to all our fabulous local businesses that work so hard and continue to serve our communities.

The winners of our free ad spots giveaway are:

Vibes Candles, by Lex. Because you deserve vibey things. Check out more are www.vibescandles.com.

Juliana’s Catering, a local catering business offering contact-free brick-oven pizza. You can find more details at www.julianascatering.com.

We cheer for our local businesses and we urge you, if you are in Massachusetts, to support these small businesses within the community.
