Tim Walz, born Timothy James Walz on April 6, 1964, in West Point, Nebraska, is an American politician, educator, and former military servicemember who currently serves as the 41st Governor of Minnesota and recently was chosen as the 2024 Vice Presidential Candidate on the Harris 2024 Presidential ticket.

Walz grew up in a rural setting, the son of a public school administrator father and a community activist mother. This upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of community service and public engagement from an early age. He attended Butte Public Schools and graduated from Butte High School in 1982.

Walz pursued higher education at Chadron State College in Nebraska, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in social science education in 1989. He later expanded his academic credentials by obtaining a Master's degree in educational leadership from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2001.

Following his undergraduate studies, Walz enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in 1981 and served for 24 years. His military service included a deployment to Italy in support of Operation Endure Freedom in 2003. Walz rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major, the highest enlisted rank in the Army National Guard. His military experience would later inform his political views and priorities, particularly in areas of veterans' affairs and national security.

Parallel to his military service, Walz embarked on a career in education. He taught high school social studies in Mankato, Minnesota, for nearly two decades. His teaching experience covered various subjects, including geography and global studies. Walz's time in the classroom gave him firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities within the American education system, which would later influence his policy positions as a politician.

Walz's political career began in 2006 when he successfully ran for the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Minnesota's 1st congressional district. His victory was notable as he defeated six-term incumbent Gil Gutknecht in a traditionally Republican-leaning district. Walz's ability to connect with rural voters and his moderate stance on many issues contributed to his electoral success.

During his tenure in Congress, Walz served on several important committees, including the Agriculture Committee, Armed Services Committee, and Veterans' Affairs Committee. He became known for his advocacy on behalf of veterans, farmers, and rural communities. Some of his key accomplishments in Congress include:

Authoring the STOCK Act, which prohibits members of Congress from using non-public information for personal financial gain.

Championing renewable energy initiatives and supporting the expansion of wind and solar power in Minnesota.

Working to improve healthcare access for veterans and reform the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Advocating for increased funding for education and supporting measures to make higher education more affordable.

Walz's bipartisan approach and ability to work across the aisle earned him respect from colleagues on both sides of the political spectrum.

In 2017, Walz announced his candidacy for Governor of Minnesota. Running on a platform that emphasized education, healthcare, and economic opportunity, he secured the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party nomination. In the general election, Walz faced Republican Jeff Johnson and won with 53.8% of the vote, becoming Minnesota's 41st governor.

As governor, Walz has focused on several key policy areas:

Education: He has advocated for increased funding for public schools and expanding access to early childhood education.

Healthcare: Walz has worked to protect and expand healthcare coverage, including efforts to lower prescription drug costs.

Climate Change: He has set ambitious goals for reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy in Minnesota.

COVID-19 Response: Walz's governorship has been significantly shaped by the pandemic, where he implemented various measures to combat the spread of the virus and support affected communities and businesses.

Racial Equity: Following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020, Walz has pushed for police reform and initiatives to address racial disparities in the state.

Walz is married to Gwen Walz, an education professional who has been actively involved in various educational initiatives. They have two children, Hope and Gus. The Walz family is known for their down-to-earth demeanor and commitment to public service.

Walz's journey from a small-town Nebraska upbringing to the governorship of Minnesota reflects a career defined by public service, whether in the military, classroom, or political office. His ability to connect with a wide range of constituents and his pragmatic approach to governance have been hallmarks of his political career.
