THREE CHEERS FOR GLENN YOUNGKIN
Sometimes candidates pleasantly surprise you.
Republican Glenn Youngkin was sworn in as Governor of Virginia over the weekend, after winning a massive upset in the reliably blue state this past November. And on his first day in office, he took immediate action, signing 11 executive orders. I've paraphrased a few of them below:
Ending the use of divisive concepts, including Critical Race Theory in public education
Empower Virginia parents in their children's education by allowing them to decide if their child wears a mask to school
Investigate wrongdoing in Loudon County [last year a transgender student raped multiple girls inside the girls' bathroom/locker and the country tried to cover it up]
Combat and prevent human trafficking and provide support to survivors
Establish a commission to combat antisemitism
Restore individual freedoms and personal privacy by rescinding the vaccine mandate for all state employees
Adding to the enthusiasm of the day, the new Republican government made history:
Winsome Sears (R) became the first Black woman to hold statewide office in Virginia after being sworn in as Lieutenant Governor.
Jason Miyares (R) became the first Latino to hold statewide office in Virginia after he was sworn in as Attorney General.
Congrats, Virginia. It looks like you are in for a major upgrade. This is the energy and enthusiasm we need to carry over to the 2022 midterms.
