On June 29th, 1986, one of the most iconic moments in World Cup history took place during the quarterfinal match between Argentina and England at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The match, which was played in front of a crowd of 114,580 spectators, is remembered for two remarkable goals scored by Argentine legend Diego Maradona.

The first goal, known as the "Hand of God," occurred in the 51st minute when Maradona, who was only 5'5" tall, leaped and used his left hand to punch the ball over the head of England goalkeeper Peter Shilton and into the net. Despite the protests of the English players, Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser allowed the goal to stand, as he had not seen the handball.

Just four minutes later, Maradona scored what would become known as the "Goal of the Century." Receiving the ball in his own half, Maradona dribbled past five English players - Peter Beardsley, Peter Reid, Terry Butcher (twice), and Terry Fenwick - before rounding Shilton and slotting the ball into the empty net. The incredible solo effort showcased Maradona's sublime skill, balance, and audacity, cementing his status as one of the greatest players of all time.

Argentina went on to win the match 2-1, with Gary Lineker scoring a late consolation goal for England. The team, led by Maradona's brilliance, would ultimately lift the World Cup trophy, defeating West Germany 3-2 in the final.

The match between Argentina and England, and particularly Maradona's two goals, have become part of football folklore, inspiring countless discussions, documentaries, and articles. The "Hand of God" and the "Goal of the Century" remain two of the most iconic moments in the history of the beautiful game, forever linking June 29th with the genius of Diego Maradona.
