On June 25th in sports history, one significant event that stands out is the infamous "Bite Fight" between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield in 1997. The highly anticipated rematch between the two heavyweight boxing legends took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The first bout between Tyson and Holyfield in November 1996 ended with Holyfield pulling off a stunning upset, stopping Tyson in the 11th round to claim the WBA heavyweight title. The rematch was expected to be another epic battle, but it turned out to be one of the most bizarre and controversial fights in boxing history.
In the third round, Tyson, seemingly frustrated with Holyfield's dominant performance, suddenly bit Holyfield's right ear during a clinch. Referee Mills Lane called a time-out and deducted two points from Tyson. Shockingly, Tyson bit Holyfield's left ear in the same round, tearing off a piece of his cartilage. The fight was immediately stopped, and Holyfield was declared the winner by disqualification.
The incident sent shockwaves through the sports world and remains one of the most surreal moments in boxing history. Tyson's boxing license was temporarily revoked, and he was fined $3 million. The "Bite Fight" has since become a part of sports folklore, forever etched in the annals of boxing history.
The event also had a lasting impact on both fighters' careers. Holyfield would go on to defend his heavyweight title successfully before losing it to Lennox Lewis in 1999. Tyson, on the other hand, struggled to regain his form and never won another major title fight.
June 25th, 1997, will always be remembered as the day when one of the most anticipated rematches in boxing history turned into a bizarre and unsportsmanlike spectacle that shocked fans around the world.
