show moreThe Warriors, who had set an NBA record with 73 regular-season wins, took a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. However, the Cavaliers refused to give up and won the next two games to force a decisive Game 7.
In a tightly contested battle, the score was tied at 89-89 with just under a minute to play. That's when Irving hit a clutch three-pointer over Stephen Curry to give the Cavaliers a 92-89 lead. The Warriors had a chance to tie the game, but Curry missed a three-pointer, and the Cavaliers secured the rebound. James was fouled and hit one of two free throws to extend the lead to 93-89.
The Warriors had one final possession, but Curry's desperation three-pointer was off the mark, and the Cavaliers celebrated their first NBA championship in franchise history. James, who had promised to bring a title to Cleveland when he returned to the team in 2014, was named Finals MVP after averaging 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists per game in the series.
The Cavaliers' victory ended Cleveland's 52-year championship drought across all major sports and brought joy to a city that had endured years of heartbreak. The team's comeback from a 3-1 deficit was a testament to their resilience and determination, and it will forever be remembered as one of the greatest moments in NBA history.
