At the same time, Mary starts to suspect her own husband, Hugh, of witchcraft after a series of events, including accusations of cursing a cow and causing an illness. As paranoia spreads, Hugh is further implicated after the death of their child, Samuel. The townspeople turn against them, and Mary, overwhelmed by her delusions, confesses to witchcraft. She is sentenced to death but dies from typhus before execution. Hugh is released but fades into obscurity.
