The Coach

Terms...
Coach/Coachee

Like a sports coach works on our physical technique and mindset for the big game, a Discipleship Coach helps us with our spiritual technique and mindset for everyday we go into the world. Then the coachee spends the week practicing the techniques with a renewed mind and purposeful obedience.

A new term?
Some misnomers…
But here is what Coaching for discipleship is…

Coaching is a lost art and critical for connecting…
1. values to thinking.
2. thinking to action.
3. action to overcoming and/or persevering.

Coaching instills the critical thinking, that we use to take for granted and we find out that it's another virtue that we have given over to the enemy… and now we have a hard time even understanding it.

Here is what Coaching gives us…
- Values discovery, focus, resolve, fortitude.
- EQ - is the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one's goal(s). Wikipedia
• This is what we might call MINDSET… and we need to choose it rather than "let the game come to us."
• The renewing of the mind isn't something that happens to us… it is a process we actively participate in.

• From Paul in the book of Ephesians…
So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. - Ephesians 4:17-24 NASB

This is describing how one thinks!

- This approach of coaching disciples, opens the door to many fantastic benefits!
• Clarity in their walk.
• Planning.
• Provides the space to create structures for success.
• Has us looking forward to anticipate obstacles and overcoming them.
• Key component? Curiosity! :-)
• Give us Sustained action and obedience over time.

What is a Discipleship Coach?
Coaching puts a turbo on the disciples ability to take action and maintain sustained action over time. It's an effective and compelling function that aids and informs the disciple in always moving forward.

Discipleship that includes coaching becomes a full immersion into discipleship.

Hear Paul's mindset that he is coaching…
I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings. Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. - 1 Corinthians 9:23-27 NLT

It is the discipler's skill of Coaching that is effective in developing this kind of mindset in the disciple to overcome… just as we as disciples have been commanded to do!
