In the astonishment of thousands gathered around the aquarium, a shark that had been brought in just eight days prior coughed up a human arm, sparking one of Sydney’s most thrilling investigations in history. In 1935, sharks were considered “public enemy number one” in Sydney, as in late February and early March of that year, three young men were killed by sharks at beaches in New South Wales.Several "shark hunters" were offered rewards to rid Sydney's beaches of this menace. On April 17, 1935, one of these hunters caught a small shark off the coast of Coogee, but shortly after, it was swallowed whole by a 4-meter-long tiger shark weighing over a ton.
