In a move to curb theft and criminal activities linked to the metal scavenging sector, the Anambra State Government recently announced a ban on metal scavenging. The decision followed a series of thefts involving public and private properties, where metals were illegally extracted, resulting in significant economic losses.

According to the ministry of information, the scavengers removed and carted away most of the iron components of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, fence facing the ever busy Enugu-Awka expressway.

According to recent statistics, the metal scavenging sector has played a crucial role in Nigeria's economy, with scavengers generating approximately N5.33 billion in revenue through the export of scrap metals within a year. The sector not only provides a livelihood for countless individuals but also contributes to resource management and environmental sustainability by recycling materials that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Key questions arise. Are there benefits derivable from this ban, what implications will it have for local economies and employment opportunities, and what’s the best approach to enforcing the ban for the benefit of all?

Here, we discuss.
