In this second episode, we present one of the main characters in this story about the soundscapes of the Mediterranean Sea: the cetaceans.

Their most crucial sense is hearing, and without it, they are unable to survive in the ocean. They are long-lived, enormous, and essential in the fight against the climate emergency. However, they are also threatened by maritime traffic, the noise associated with this activity in the Mediterranean, and collisions with vessels.

To discuss this spectacular marine species, we invited Txema Brotons, scientific director of the Tursiops organization. We also simulate the disruptive sound environment that this species encounters.

This podcast series about soundscapes of the Mediterranean Sea was originally produced in Spanish. However, so that you can enjoy this story in English, we used artificial intelligence voices. Everything else is done by humans.

This story was made possible thanks to the support of Internews Earth Journalism Network.
