Locke's chapter on property is probably the most quoted, challenged and debated of all chapters in the Second Treatise of Government. There are two central questions raised and answered by Locke. First, is it morally justifiable in the state of nature for a person to claim as her property, a portion of common land, an apple, a tree or an animal, thereby excluding everyone else from enjoyment of these things? Locke has two arguments for giving an affirmative answer to this question. The first is the labor argument for private property, discussed in this episode.
