In The North American Review published in 1890, Theodore Roosevelt wrote an amazing article on Americans and sports. He advocated for not only "manly" sports and outdoor pursuits but also for active participation instead of sedentary spectators watching others play. It was through this proper active participation that the best citizens were created. This idea of active participation was quite a prominent theme by the 1920s, but Roosevelt was on it long before. In the early 1960s, JFK was delivering a new version of Teddy Roosevelt's message by encouraging more active participation by Americans who "needed to get into the game" as opposed to being spectators in life.
