On Christmas Day 2009, Kurt Haskell and his wife Lori were on-board Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam bound for Detroit, on which the so-called "Underwear Bomber", Farouk Abdulmutallab, attempted to set off an explosive or incendiary device. According to the official version of events, this was an Al-Qaeda attack against the United States of America.
