Never ones to rest on their laurels, Victorian punk rock and roll outfit Coffin Wolf have thrown a bit of a curveball with recently released single 'Tarred', showcasing a heavier edge to their sound not heard before.
"In the past, we were a bit more towards the punk side", agreed vocalist/guitarist Braiden Mann, "but we felt like maybe we weren't heavy enough (laughs) so we wanted to ramp it up a bit. We tuned the guitars down lower and made it a bit heavier and punchier and pretty much did whatever we wanted"!
Originally teased as a single from a yet-to-be-released LP, Mann says the sheer weight of material the band has written has made them re-evaluate things.
"That was the plan but now it's not", he laughed. "It's just gonna sit there by itself. We started tracking the album and as it got further and further into it we just kept writing material so now we've got plenty for a full length without that song on there. That will just sit on its lonesome along with previous single 'Open Road' and we've actually got another one in the bank ready to go that we will probably throw a film clip to and dump out later in the year".
In the full interview Braiden discusses the film clip to 'Tarred', including why they chose to wear face paint to make them look like a death metal band, the thought process behind releasing singles that will not be on the album, the musical direction of the new album, how it will differ to the Vultures EP, their appearance at Brewtality Festival this weekend, the rise of Australian metal and more.
