It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. Our “fight-or-flight” response to fear triggers many split-second changes in our body to help defend against danger or to avoid it. Most people will experience a range of reactions after trauma, but most of us recover from these symptoms naturally. Individuals who continue to experience problems may be diagnosed with Post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event. It is amazing how one traumatic experience can change your life’s purpose.

Our guest this week, Linda Stanley, a retired Air Force Officer, was deployed to Iraq in 2006 as a trauma nurse. Linda previously worked in the emergency psychiatric clinic specializing in PTSD assessment and treatment. She is currently a psychiatric nurse practitioner at a residential treatment facility designed to promote recovery in Veterans, particularly those who returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Linda has dedicated her life to helping those struggling with PTSD and has spoken nationally on the topic of PTSD to numerous professional groups.
