Mike started his professional career as one of the first artists signed to Hidden Beach Records (Jill Scott was the other artist). The Hidden Beach Record label was blessed to have Michael Jordan as one of its key investors.
Since Michael Jordan and many other NBA greats, including Wayman Tisdale had known of Mike Phillips talent when he was a teenage performing at a club, many NBA players frequented when they were on the road playing against the Knicks and Nets, it was easy to see why Mike Phillips was signed as one of Hidden Beach's initial artists.
However, Mike Phillips is also one of few saxophone players who was a member of Prince's band at different periods (Maceo Parker, Najee and, Candi Dulfer would be the other saxophone players).
