The Locked Room

Detective Samantha Jones stood outside the locked room, her heart pounding. Inside, the lifeless body of millionaire businessman, Robert Montgomery, lay sprawled on the floor. The room was sealed from the inside, with no windows and no other exits. It appeared to be an impossible crime.

As Samantha examined the scene, she noticed a peculiar smell emanating from the victim's mouth. She also found a shattered glass near the body, its contents spilled on the carpet. The only other object in the room was a small, ornate wooden box on the desk.

Samantha questioned the victim's wife, Margaret, who claimed she had been in the garden when the incident occurred. The butler, James, stated that he had been in the kitchen preparing dinner. Both had alibis confirmed by other staff members.

Perplexed, Samantha turned her attention to the wooden box. Inside, she discovered a note written in Robert's handwriting: "I can no longer bear the guilt of my actions. I have taken the only path to redemption."

Suddenly, the mystery unraveled in Samantha's mind. She confronted Margaret, who broke down in tears, confessing that Robert had been slowly poisoning her for months. She had discovered his plan and, in an act of desperation, had replaced Robert's antidote with a lethal dose of the same poison. Robert, unaware of the switch, had locked himself in the room to take the antidote, only to ingest the poison that would end his life.

Margaret had staged the scene to look like a suicide, but she hadn't counted on Samantha's keen eye for detail. The detective had solved the locked room mystery, revealing the tragic tale of a marriage gone wrong and a desperate act of revenge.
