Story Transcript:

En: In the small village of Vredehoek, where sunflowers grow between the cobblestone paths, an old church stands patiently every day.

En: The church, with its large tower and heavy bell, looks down on the houses that resemble chess pieces.

Af: Dit was nie sommer enige oue kerk nie; dit was Die Ou Kerk, en die mense van Vredehoek was baie trots daarop.
En: It wasn't just any old church; it was The Old Church, and the people of Vredehoek were very proud of it.

En: One of the village's residents was Lukas, a boy with a heart as big as the church's front door.

En: He always helped where he could, but sometimes his help had strange consequences.

En: One day, Tannie Betsie, who regularly rang the church bells, asked Lukas to look after the church while she was away for the weekend.

En: "Lukas, don't forget to ring the bell at eight o'clock in the evening," she said calmly.

En: Lukas solemnly promised and stood guard in front of the church like a watchdog.

En: But the poor boy's days and nights started to blend together.

En: His sleep was filled with dreams of giant alarm clocks and alarm bells.

En: On a particular night, when the moon shone brightly above the church, Lukas heard a tremendous sound.

En: He was startled from his sleep, thinking it was his alarm clock, and without thinking twice, he went straight to the bell rope.

En: With all his strength, he pulled, time and time again until the bell's peal echoed through the village.

En: Anika, a girl with red hair and a sly smile, jumped out of bed.

Af: "Wat gaan aan!" het sy gewonder.
En: "What's happening!" she wondered.

En: Even Hendrik, an old uncle with a tender heart, grabbed his hat and stepped outside.

Af: Die hele dorp was wakker, met oë groot soos pierings.
En: The whole village was awake, with eyes as wide as saucers.

En: Lukas's heart sank into his shoes when he realized what he had done.

Af: Hy het 'n fout gemaak, 'n groot fout.
En: He had made a mistake, a big mistake.

En: The village people all streamed to The Old Church, tired and confused.

Af: "Ek is jammer!
En: "I'm sorry! I thought it was my alarm clock," Lukas stammered.

Af: Wat 'n gemors!
En: What a mess!

En: Anika laughed and shook her head.

En: "Lukas, you may have rung the bell by mistake, but you made all of us wake up and see how beautiful the night can be."

En: Even Hendrik smiled and patted Lukas on the shoulder.

En: "Your heart was in the right place, son."

Af: En so, onder die naghemel by Die Ou Kerk, het die mense van Vredehoek saam gestaan.
En: And so, under the night sky at The Old Church, the people of Vredehoek stood together.

En: They watched the stars twinkle and listened to the silence that followed the last echo of the bell.

En: Lukas never made that mistake again, but from that day on, he knew that if he had to look after the church again, he would make sure he could distinguish his alarm clock from the church bell.

En: And the people of Vredehoek always had a story to tell about the night when the old church's bell woke up the village.
