On January 26, 1996, Dave Schultz, Olympic gold medal winner and wrestling champion, was shot three times by du Pont family heir John E. du Pont at the famed Foxcatcher Farms estate in Pennsylvania. You might recall sensational media coverage and subsequent murder trial, where du Pont was found guilty and sentenced to 13-30 years. He later died in prison. What hasn’t yet been told is the inside story of the complex relationship between du Pont and both Dave and his brother Mark Schultz. Mark—an Olympic gold medal champion wrestler himself—was also part of the Foxcatcher team, and worked with du Pont before his brother did. Now, he opens up in his memoir Foxcatcher: The True Story of My Brother’s Murder, John du Pont’s Madness, and the Quest for Olympic Gold.

A movie based on the events, also titled Foxcatcher and directed by Bennett Miller (of Capote and Moneyball fame) is scheduled to be released this month. Starring Channing Tatum, Steve Carell, and Mark Ruffalo, the film has already received phenomenal early reviews, including an eight-minute standing ovation when it premiered at Cannes.
