Domenica 28 giugno 1914. Quando si diffonde la notizia che Francesco Ferdinando d'Asburgo e Sophie Chotek sono stati assassinati a Sarajevo, sono in pochi a provare realmente dolore per l'accaduto. A Vienna nemmeno fermano le giostre del Prater. Dal punto di vista politico, però, le cose stanno diversamente: è stato ucciso l'erede al trono dell'Impero austro-ungarico, il simbolo vivente dello Stato asburgico. Come reagirà l'Austria? E riusciranno gli altri Stati a contenere l'ennesima crisi balcanica? Gli europei ancora non lo sanno, ma si stanno godendo l'ultima estate di pace. L'estate della Crisi di Luglio, dei Cannoni di agosto e dello scoppio della Prima guerra mondiale.
