MESSAGE NOTES:

How to Leave a Legacy

Legacy is what people remember when you’re gone.

Psalm 112:5-9 (NIV)
5 Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice. 6 Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever. 7 They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. 8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. 9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor.

What we do for ourselves usually dies with us.
What we do for others lives beyond us.

“Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself a pillar that is in the King’s Valley, for he said, ‘I have no son to keep my name in remembrance’; he called the pillar by his own name. It is called Absalom’s Monument to this day.” -2 Samuel 18:18
(NIV)

“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” -Shannon L. Adler

4 Biblical Pillars of Legacy
1. A clear VISION of what could be.
Where there is no prophetic vision, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction. -Proverbs 29:18 (NIV)

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” -Helen Keller

“We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to do something that will.” -Chuck Palahniuk

2. A CONVICTION of what I believe.
28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me. - Colossians 1:28-29 (NIV)

3. An ACTION-oriented lifestyle.
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
-Matthew 7:24 (NIV)

“If you do not want to be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write something worth reading or do something worth writing about.” -Benjamin Franklin

4. A commitment to WAITING on God.
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. -Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
