New York Fashion Week is one of the most significant events in the world for designers to showcase their collections and set new trends. As cannabis legalization spreads, designers are rethinking what hemp can do for clothing, especially regarding sustainability. Some designers are using their New York shows to make political and social commentary on the state of cannabis legalization.
For NYFW spring 2020, Project Runway superstar Korto Momolu connected with the Colorado-based organization Women Grow to create a collection of 26 pieces that would help destigmatize cannabis and hemp. From athleisure to eveningwear, Korto showcased eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics like hemp, cork, and linen, all through pieces designed to spark a conversation on the growing acceptance of cannabis.
In this episode, host Brit Smith talks to Korto about fashion's role in cannabis culture and hemp's role in the sustainable fashion movement. They discuss how the stigma of hemp and cannabis influenced Korto's designs, how she worked with the hemp fabric to make it appear soft and fashionable, and how choosing natural fibers can fuel the growing eco-friendly fashion movement.
