show moreThe "leaky pipeline" metaphor describes the mechanism through which women and other groups steadily become underrepresented minorities in the STEM fields. In some fields like mathematics and engineering the disequilibrium starts before undergrad, with fewer women choosing these disciplines, while in biological and life sciences represent more than half of the students earning PhDs, yet there is still a massive underrepresentation at the leading positions.
In this live we tried to make sense of these discrepancies by combining data and our personal experience, in order to bring awareness on the subtle mechanisms that cause them.
