The most pressing need for the average Nigerian home currently is food.
Feeding on three square meals a day has become a luxury, no thanks to the high food inflation rate, caused by a combination of factors including the removal of fuel subsidies, a unified exchange rate, and a weakening naira.
Since President Bola Tinubu announced the twin policies of fuel subsidy removal and a unified exchange rate in May 2023, the country has witnessed a steady rise in headline and food inflation. Although food inflation, which peaked at 40.87% in June 2024—the highest in recent history—slowed down to 39.53% in July 2024 as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics, the worst is yet to be over. Families have continued to resort to cutting back on essential expenses and seeking alternative means to ameliorate the hunger crisis, including those detrimental to their health.
Given the ongoing economic challenges, grassroots initiatives like home gardening and local food campaigns have gained traction.
Following this trend, the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, earlier this month launched the "Farm to Feed Campaign." The aim is to enhance local food production, ensure a steady supply of nutritious food, and reduce the impact of rising food costs on households.
