William Shakespeare's Sonnets were love poems - but the first 126 were about a Fair Youth and the first 17 clearly encouraging a young man to marry and father children. But who was the fair youth and do they imply that Shakespeare had a gay relationship.
I have done some research on this and looked at some sonnets from a fresh perspective. Shakespeare lived in a world where young boys and men plated women's roles in the theatre. The theatre is renowned for being a place of refuge and support for gay men. But there are more clues to Shakespeare's gender nonconforming past, and perhaps some explanation for the missing years. Shakespeare also played with gender within his plays - Join me for some alternative explanations of his mysterious life.
