General Lee gambled on a second invasion of the north. Although the Federal army was slow to move, he was being shadowed by General John Buford's 1st cavalry division. On July 1st, elements of General Heath's division approached Gettysburg to requisition shoes for his men. He ran into Buford's dismounted cavalry troopers and the battle was on.
