In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:
Tomorrow Never Lies
* Danny Boyle and the Fate of Bond 25
* As I’m sure many of you are aware, the frontrunner to Direct Bond 25 is now Danny Boyle.
* The story first broke on February 20th from Justin Kroll at Variety.
* Boyle has keen interest in the project and has always wanted to direct a Bond film. He is currently developing a project for Working Title, but with no cast currently attached, there is always the possibility of pushing that movie back to direct the 25th installment in the series.
* Boyle has long been in MGM and Eon’s sights to direct a Bond movie, going back to 2012’s “Skyfall” and 2015’s “Spectre.”
* Sources tell Variety that “White Boy Rick” director Yann Demange was considered a top choice for the job, but there’s been one last push to go after a more well-known name.
* No official offer has been made.
* Then a follow up story from Mike Fleming broke just the next day with more details:
* When he directed the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics, Boyle helmed Daniel Craig in a filmed bit that involved an action scene with a cameo from Queen Elizabeth II, so there is history between the actor and filmmaker. Boyle had an idea for a very specific 007 movie, and he and his Trainspotting partner John Hodge have teamed up to work out the beats. Hodge is writing that version and if it all works out, that would be the 007 film that Boyle would helm.
* Hodge won’t be done for a couple of months, but when he turns in the script, one of two things will happen. MGM and the producers will like it enough to shelve the movie they were contemplating — the listed writers are Neal Purvis & Robert Wade, whose 007 credits include Skyfall, Spectreand Casino Royale — and they will instead make the version that was cooked up by the Trainspotting team. Otherwise, Boyle won’t direct the film and it will be back to the other script, for which MGM and the producers had assembled a short list consisting of a trio of cool directors
* Now all that is well and good, but here’s where things get interesting.
* On March 6th, According to THR, it was reported that Yann Demange, who was heavily rumored to be a frontrunner on EON’s list of potential Bond 25 Directors, will not only be directing the upcoming Matthew McConaughey film “White Boy Rick”, but has also been tapped by J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele to join the team on HBO’s new series “Lovecraft Country”.
* Demange will direct the pilot episode and executive produce the series.
* So at this point it would seem that MGM and EON’s backup is looking to be unavailable, thank God for Danny Boyle right? Well, it may be even trickier than we thought.
* On March 4th, According to THR, Danny Boyle and Love Actually screenwriter Richard Curtis are teaming for an untitled comedy just set up at Universal. Details are being kept under lock and key, but it is known to be musically themed and set in the 1960s or '70s. Universal is eyeing a shoot as early as this summer, if the casting can come together.
* If the project gets the green light, this could serve as a tricky road-bump for the producers at EON should they like the script Hodge producers.
* It would seem that progress on Bond 25 is back to step 1, however just yesterday, March 8th, and interesting story emerged from Baz Bamigboye at The Daily Mail.
* It would appear that 007 himself is pulling out all the stops to ensure Danny Boyle does in fact helm the next Bond project.
* Craig attended a meeting with James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson and Boyle and his Trainspotting writing partner John Hodge, where the film-makers pitched their vision for Bond 25.
* ‘They took the idea to Barbara, never believing for a minute she would go for it. But she’s excited by the concept — and so is her producing partner Michael,’ a closely connected source told Baz in Los Angeles.
* ‘But the most important cheerleader in the meeting was Daniel, and he was pushing for Danny to direct. He loves the fact that it’s something completely different. He has not signed up for more of the same old Bond.’
* Hodge has not completed the screenplay as of yet, but one it is finished and all parties are satisfied, Boyle and Co. will get the greenlight.
* As for Boyle’s work on his upcoming musical, Broccoli and Wilson’s Eon Productions, and executives at MGM, have formed an unusual alliance with Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner to ‘smooth the way’ so that if the Boyle-Hodge Bond idea gets the green light, the pair can move seamlessly from All You Need Is Love to Bond 25.
* Bamigboye’s source goes on to say the following:
* ‘The seed of Danny and John’s Bond was planted when Danny directed that incredible short film — featuring Daniel Craig, the Queen and her corgis — for the opening of the 2012 London Olympics. That’s where the bond, for want of a better word, was formed,’ one of my big-time sources told me. ‘I’d be shot if I told you the story idea they’ve come up with, but it’s pure movie gold.
* ‘Everybody is rooting for this to happen. I mean, the idea that Danny might be able to shoot the Curtis film and then be shooting Bond by the end of the year is breathtaking.
* ‘It’s high-stakes British movie producing of the highest order. Your Queen should give them all medals if they pull it off!’
* And to wrap this segment up nicely, Bamigboye seems convinced, especially after talking with his sources, that Craig and Boyle will be teaming up to tackle what will be a wild ride for Bond 25.
