Tevin Everett, award winning filmmaker, discusses on UNSUGARCOATED with Aalia his inspiration to become a writer and director after being in the Navy for nearly 9 years (07:25). Everett wanted to become a filmmaker because he wanted to tell stories about the lives of black people without racism being at the heart of the story (08:25). He believes that telling these stories, especially through a comedic lens, will help all people become more respectful of the black community by “laughing and learning” (12:24). He does just this in his series Diversity Hires (13:45). Everett also discusses how he comes up with his stories (26:10) and how he aspires to be like the great Spike Lee and Ryan Coogler (37:00). He hopes that his ambitions will lead others to think that Everett is authentic in his storytelling and demeanor (40:25). Looking forward, Everett is working on Catalyst, a project that focuses on mental health in the black community (41:00).
