In this episode, we talk about Maike’s desire to help driven individuals, leaders, and organisations to flourish. We talk about mental health being so much more than the inexistence of mental illness and how Positive Psychology has gone through multiple waves to reach its current state. Maike shares with us some of the many benefits of this discipline in psychology and we elaborate on self-leadership, self-knowledge and what you need to thrive and flourish. We talk about why there is so much more to setting goals than making them SMART and together, we dismantle motivation and give a perspective that may help you to find some more of it. If you want to live a perfect life according to your terms, the first step is to figure out those terms and gain self-knowledge. We discuss the difference of internal and external assessments of your strengths and why it is so important to be aware of them. Maike explains how your values are acting as a compass and why they are a key component for happiness. We look into the power of asking questions and learn how motivation and mental and physical energy are inseparable. We discuss four different types of extrinsic motivation and their quality. We discuss the danger of “miswanting”, cognitive dissonance and why telling yourself stories that are not true is the most inefficient thing to do if you want to create a life you love. Finally, we learn how to create self-trust and why it is so important before we discuss how you need autonomy, competence and relatedness in regard to motivate yourself to change.
